Suzanne Elizabeth (Cash) Mason, age 62, passed away peacefully October 25, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. Suzy was born March 9, 1963, in Nassau, Bahamas to parents Lowell and Deana (Michael) Cash.
Suzy is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Douglas “Doug” Mason, with whom she had just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. She also leaves behind her children Rachel (Brad) Bower, Doug Mason Jr., Sarah (Alex) Blincoe, and David Mason; three grandchildren Elise, Lily, and Zoey Bower; mother, Deana Cash; brother, Mike (Ann) Cash; and beloved aunts, an uncle, cousins, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Lowell Cash and sister, Cathy Babusch.
Suzy grew up in Lowell, Indiana and graduated in 1981. She then earned her bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University where she met Doug, a student at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. They met during their senior year, when renting from the same landlord in houses next to each other. They quickly fell in love and got engaged on St. Patrick’s Day. After a short engagement, they married that same year on October 5, 1985.
Suzy worked at the local credit union in Wyoming, Michigan until she and Doug started their family. She gave up her career to stay at home with her children which was marked with lots of delicious cooking and card games. Her children are especially grateful for and will greatly miss her bulgogi, pool parties, and playing Up the River, Down the River.
After the youngest was in school, Suzy went to work for the Byron Center Public Schools, where she found her happy place at Marshall Elementary. Many will remember her as “Mrs. Mason," the cheerful voice answering the phones or the one providing ice packs to students until she retired in 2023, after 19 years of service. Doug retired soon after so they could spend more time together.
After starting retirement, Doug and Suzy enjoyed traveling and attending many (many) concerts. They loved the freedom to hit the road on a whim and enjoyed visiting wineries, farmers markets, and many local parks and trails. A bench in her honor will be placed in one of their favorites, Prairie Wolf Park. Her absolute favorite activity was going to the library, getting books from authors such as Brown, Grisham, Crichton, and Baldacci, and reading them on the back deck in the sunshine or while floating in the pool. This always brought a smile to Doug’s face as he knew she was content.
Her family remembers her as the glue that kept them all together. She was always planning a get together, a holiday celebration (with too much food), or getting a new board game to play. She loved to be surrounded by friends and family and was always the one behind the fun. Her laughter, smile, and her kindness are deeply missed by those who knew her.
Each of her children would like you to know that they were, in fact, her favorite and that they have a Christmas ornament to prove it.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to American Cancer Society or Paws with a Cause in her name. Visitation services will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, November 6, 2025 at Cook Funeral Home, 2067 84th St. SW, Byron Center, MI 49315. A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 7 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 9408 Wilson Ave. SW, Byron Center, with visitation one hour prior to Mass beginning at 9:30 a.m. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresbyron.com in their guestbook online.
