

Tom attended school at West Catholic. After graduation, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he was an Airman First Class, E4. While on leave in November of 1963, Tom met the love of his life, Kathleen (Kathy). Tom and Kathy were united in marriage September 5, 1964 at the Holy Name Church. They moved to Savannah, Georgia where they had their first child, Dawn. After moving to Illinois, daughter number two, Missy, was born. In 1968, they moved back to Michigan and later had daughter number three, Cindy. Tom and Kathy had ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. They were married for 57 years of pure joy.
Tom retired from United Parcel Service (UPS). Tom looked forward to spending time at the family cabin where he enjoyed hunting turkey and deer. After retirement, he and Kathy loved spending their winters in Arizona with their friend from the park. Tom had recently joined Knights of Columbus through St. Sebastian Catholic Church; he thoroughly enjoyed this.
Tom is preceded in death by his wife, Kathy Schatner; father, John Schatner; mother, Florence Schatner; and brother, Jack. His is remembered by his sister, Rose (Harley) Huffman; children Dawn Stauffer, Michele “Missy” (Chris) Layle, and Cindy (Mike) Heilmann; grandchildren Alysha (Jim), Rachael (Alex), Mandy (Tony), Alexandra, Samantha, Taylor, Tyler (Kayla), Carrin, Sierra, and Megan; great-grandchildren Noah, Trinity, Toryn, Evelyn, Hayzle, and Hayes.
A Funeral Mass for Tom will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 2, 2024, with visitation one hour prior, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 9408 Wilson Ave. SW, Byron Center, MI 49315. Msgr. William Duncan will be officiating. In honor of Tom and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Knights of Columbus. Interment will be at St. Sebastian Cemetery.
