Bill was born August 7, 1939 in Grand Rapids to Samuel and Ann (Kandler) Schreur. The family moved to Grandville where Bill eventually became a big brother to three sisters. After graduating from Grandville High School in 1957, Bill served in the U.S. Marine Corps and won multiple regional titles in the Michigan Golden Gloves. On April 8, 1967, Bill married Susan Wood. The couple built a life in Grand Rapids, first with Bill as a successful HVAC sales rep before starting their own HVAC firm, Airtech Equipment, Inc., in 1985, which they ran until retiring. Bill was a member of ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers) and served as the organization's president.
Bill was known for his positive attitude, fun-loving spirit, playful sense of humor, generosity, kindness, and devotion to his family and friends. He was an avid boater and loved to fish. He also was very mechanical and good with his hands, including becoming an outstanding woodworker later in life. Bill wasn't much of a fan of sitting still and remained as active as Sue would allow him to be, even later in life when mobility became challenging. When he did finally sit down, Bill enjoyed watching sports like boxing and football, as well as reading.
Bill and Sue also had several special dogs over the years, including Taffy, a Maltese who was a fixture with them on their boat in Grand Haven. Bill was a proud veteran of the Marine Corps and a devout Christian. He was an active member of several churches throughout his life, the last of which being Cornerstone Church in Caledonia.
In addition to his wife, Susan, Bill is survived by his daughter, Shauna (Jeff) Allchin of Byron Center; son, Jeffrey (Angela) Schreur, also of Byron Center; grandsons Hunter, Parker, Jacob and Alex; sisters Judy (James) Brack, Diane Schreur, and Susie (David) Young; 14 nephews and nieces; and several great-nephews and -nieces. Bill was preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Ann Schreur and father- and mother-in-law Edward and Anne Wood.
The family would like to thank the staff at Grand Book Assisted Living Facility in Grandville for their kindness and dedication during Bill's short stay there. The funeral and visitation will be held at Cook Funeral Home, 2067 84th St. SW, Byron Center. Visitation will be held from 5 - 8 p.m. Thursday, April 28, and 10 - 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, with the funeral beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, April 29.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks those wishing to show their respects to consider a donation to American Diabetes Association. The family welcomes memories and messages in their guestbook online at www.cookcaresbyron.com.
