Allen is predeceased by his beloved wife Helen (2019) of 64 years and daughter Judy Ketchen (2016). He is survived by his loving daughters Lynn Fitch, Karin Davis and his grandchildren.
Al's early years alternated between boring winters in North Toronto and happy, active summers across the harbour at Wards Island. His favourite activities included sailing and singing in the boys' quartet.
After attending the University of Toronto, Al’s career started in the Actuarial Department of Crown Life Insurance Company in 1952, and after several transfers and promotions he was able to take early retirement in 1982 as Superintendent of Office Administration.
A life-long learner, Al took numerous classes and obtained many certificates over the years and was also an avid reader. Even in his last weeks, he was reading and sharing his learnings from books on politics, history, and democracy.
His love of singing carried throughout his adulthood and led to a sixty-seven-year membership of the Barbershop Harmony Society whose members provided many life-long friends and "aunts and uncles" for his children. He served in virtually every chapter executive position including Chapter President of Toronto Chapter, Scarborough Dukes of Harmony and Kitchener-Waterloo Twin City Harmonizers. As well as preforming, Al had the opportunity to write and/or produce more than fifty shows and was known for his clever parodies.
Al’s guiding principle in life, adapted from Reinhold Neibuhr's famous quotation, was "To have the serenity to accept the things I should not or cannot change, the courage to change the things I should and can, and the wisdom to know the difference."
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date due to the ongoing changes with Covid restrictions.
Memorial donations can be made to Harmonize for Speech, Sing Canada Harmony or the Canadian Cancer Society.
