With heavy hearts we announce Mac's passing on Sunday, June 14, 2020 at The Village at University Gates, Waterloo.

Loving father to William, Nancy and John (Trish) and step-father to Lorna (Rod), Helen and Karen. Proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Dear brother to Doug (Nancy) and sister Mary. Mac is predeceased by his 2nd wife Audrey (nee Bennett) (2019), his daughter Anne (1988) and his 1st wife Kathryn (nee Pringle) (1979). He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his extended family and friends.

Mac retired from the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA), after 39 years, the last 25 as General Manager and CAO. A Mount Forest area native and former elementary school teacher, Mac will be remembered as a soft spoken, easy going gentleman who was a strong advocate for environmental awareness.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and friends and relatives will be invited to view a live broadcast of the memorial service via Facebook Live by visiting the Coutts Funeral Home & Cremation Centre Facebook page on Monday June 22nd at 2:00 pm.

As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to a charity of your choice and would be appreciated by the family.

A very special thank you to the staff of The Village at University Gates for all of the care and support they've shown.

Mac was an extremely important person in my life and he will be missed very much. As a relatively new employee at the GRCA, Mac took me under his wing (so to speak) and became the person I would always look to for sage advice. He firmly believed in the watershed agency as the vehicle for the delivery of on the ground environmental programs. Mac also had the perfect combination of environmental knowledge, and political acumen, to make things happen. I had the good fortune to attend many SCSA conferences with Mac and since his retirement we would go for lunch and watershed tours several times a year. A wonderful human being...…...

Remembering a great conservation leader who remained committed to the Grand River long after his retirement as our first General Manager. Our most sincere condolences from your friends at the GRCA and the Grand River Conservation Foundation.

As one of the last two remaining original Field Officers of the Conservation Authorities Branch, Mac will be sorely missed by all who knew him in the "movement". He was a quiet, well respected leader and passionate conservationist who helped guide the careers of so many of us. It was always a pleasure to talk with Mac at CABAL gatherings, including the last one in Terra Cotta. And Sue, a Mount Forest native, always had fun chatting with him about his time growing up in Conn. For his family, while it won't seem this way right now, the loss & sorrow you are feeling will diminish over time but the good memories will be with you forever.

My heartfelt thoughts are with Nancy and her family during this emotional time. I affectionately referred to Mac as “Dad” at numerous family gatherings over the years. Very special ❤️

On Mac's passing:
So glad to see Mac that last time on Sept 22 at the Cabal reunion, and that we were able to exchange a few words then. Mac always had time for my call when I needed some advice about a CA matter, past, present or future. I learned to listen well. Mac was one of the greats in the Conservation Authority movement.
My condolences to his family and friends.

Mac, you will be missed by your conservation authority friends. Your calm, cool, wise guidance were a real asset to us younger conservation authority GM's.
It was wonderful to have spent time with Mac last September at a retirees get together at Terra Cotta. Still the great smile and time for great memories.
My sincere sympathy to the Coutts family.

Mac and my husband, Russ Powell, were friends and conservation colleagues who shared a passion for environmental awareness in Ontario. I will always remember Mac as a quiet, soft-spoken, intelligent, elegant man. Mac called me last fall when Russ died and we had a heartfelt warm conversation. May Mac and Russ be sharing stories and laughter wherever they may be. Condolences to the family.
Sincerely, Dawn Sword
