Ivy Alice Harwood, age 86, passed away peacefully on October 28th, 2020.

Ivy was born in England in 1934. She grew up to be a beautiful young lady and started her family there. At the age of 35 Ivy, her husband, and their five children moved to Canada in the winter of 1969.

Ivy was a very caring and nurturing person at heart, and this brought Ivy to a role working in the Daycare field. She loved this work and pursued this career for many years. This work clearly suited her servant heart. Later Ivy took a role at Sun Life Insurance where she worked for many years, enjoying the experience and making many friends. Ivy retired from Sun Life in 1994. In her free time Ivy loved cycling with her friends and belonged to a cycling club in her home town of Montreal. Her life was a living example of the value of kindness. Ivy was the type of person that would always stop to help others before looking after herself. Ivy’s kind and compassionate personality was not just directed towards the people around her. She was also passionate about animals and wildlife and donated to animal focused charities most of her adult life.

Ivy Alice Harwood is the daughter of Frank Arnold Harwood (deceased) and Ivy (deceased) and sister to John (Jackie) and Grace (deceased). Beloved mother to six children; Peter (deceased), Kim, Michael (Maureen), Karl, Karen (Jon) and Richard (Jonathan). Grandmother to Mariah (Branden), Taylor, Adam, Jeremy, Mackenzie (Shant), Amanda (Kirk), and Corben (Carolina); along with two great-grandchildren: Ellie and Tobias. All of whom she loved and touched deeply.

Relatives and friends will be received on Saturday, November 7, 2020 from 1 - 2 p.m. at Coutts Funeral Home. A private family service will be held and friends and family are invited to join in a live broadcast that will begin at 2:00 p.m. through the Coutts Funeral Home Facebook Page.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.

I will always remember making Ivy a lemon bomb cake. We had finished dinner for her birthday and she cut a sliver of cake for Richard and I and then sat down and proceeded to eat the entire cake to herself with her tea. She might have been a tiny woman...but she had a big appetite for life and equally sweets.

I didn't think I would meet someone else who loved cats and animals as much as me until I met Ivy. Ivy, loved caring for her cats and rabbits, and loved going to the Zoo with the family. This was a testament to her caring nature, her gentle side how she loved to take care of other people around her and her family. My deepest sympathy to Karen and the family on your lost, I know how much you loved your mother and cared for her. You now have a angel in heaven caring for you on earth.

Love The Ogilvies.

I am saddened by the news if Ivy’s passing and my heart goes out to all of her family. I have never known a kinder more giving person that Ivy. She was one of this people who had a lot of love to give and no matter what she was dealing with in her own life she would reach out to help others.

I knew Ivy when she lived in The west Island area of Montreal. She held a very special place in the lives of my family and was an important part of helping me raise my three children, Kyle, Kassie and Samantha. In many ways I could not have done it without her. While I did not know all of her children very well, do know that she was fiercely proud of Richard and spoke of the strength of her daughters often.

So many good memories are brought forth as I write this note. Rest In Peace my friend.

Anita McComas and family.

Ivy was someone to be both admired and respected. Life did not always give her the best opportunities but her tough British spirit always enabled her to pull through!

The first time I met Ivy, probably in 1984, it was at a dance organized by the One Parent Family, Dorval Québec. She seemed to have energy to spare, swaying and bouncing to music of the seventies and eighties.

A little later I met her five children and learned of the tragedy of losing her eldest son. I marvelled at how she held down a full time job at Sun Life while being the sole care giver for her family.

As a member of the Beaconsfield Cycle Club, Québec, I encouraged Ivy to join. She was proud of her new Marinoni bike. She participated in Sunday rides of distances up to 100 kilometres! Plus the occasional weekend tour.

Life has a way of slowing us down and Karen recognized that it was time for Ivy to receive some of the same care she had so generously given to her children for most of her life. When Karen Invited Ivy to join her in her new home in Cambridge my contact with Ivy was through regular phone calls. She spoke frequently about her children and how proud she was that they had made a success of their careers. Although a mother loves all of her children equally I think there was a little extra for Richard who, like her, has overcome extra difficulties.

Ivy was special and I will always remember her.

Richard, Karen and the entire family, please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of your Mom. She was an incredibly remarkable woman - kind, strong, feisty, and loved her children dearly. She was proud of you all as I remember from many of our phone chats after she moved to Cambridge. May she rest in eternal peace!
