Predeceased by her husband, Henry Power
Marg was born on April 16 or 17, 1928, she was never sure which. Marg was born and raised in the coal mining town of New Waterford, Nova Scotia. She was brought up in the Scottish culture of Nova Scotia and was proud of her heritage.
Her father, Dan Beaton, was a carpenter who built the house they lived in. He was quite strict with his daughters, who were not allowed to go out to dances or on dates. Her mother (Sarah MacDonald Beaton), however, let the girls (Marg and Belle) sneak out the window to go to dances. Marg was proud both of her popularity with the boys and her virtue.
When she left home Marg attended secretarial school in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. There she met her husband, Henry Power of Louisbourg, at St. Francis Xavier University. They married in 1952.
Over the years, the couple and their children moved over a dozen times in Canada and the United States. Marg disliked the uprooting but valued the varied experiences of living in places such as Montreal, New York City, the Boston area, the Toronto area, London, Ontario, and finally the Kitchener-Waterloo area.
Marg remained sharp and eager to learn even into her 90s - doing cryptic crosswords, reading voraciously, and marvelling at interesting words and language. As she aged, she loved to regale her children with tales of her youth, and by her mid nineties she’d told the same stories hundreds of times. Her children would smile and pretend it was the first time they’d heard them. Now that she’s gone they’ll greatly miss sitting with her and listening to her retellings.
Cremation has taken place. As per Marguerite’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service.
