Maria Shields

Passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 5, 2015 in her 90th year, with her three sons at her bedside. Predeceased by her husband John Shields (2006), her dear son Douglas (1989), beloved granddaughter Jennifer (1996), and sisters Nina and Diana. Loving mother to her sons: Henry (Helen), Robert (Teresa) and John and daughter-in-law Jo-Ann. Proud Nonna to her grandchildren Corina, Gina, Andrew and Tony, step granddaughter Lindsay, and great grandchildren Olivia and Amber. Dear sister to Sesto (Pedra). She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends. Maria was born in a small village in Umbria, Italy. During the Allied occupation of Italy at the end of WW11, she met and married her Scottish soldier, and moved to Scotland in 1946, then immigrated to Canada in 1953. She was a loving and fiercely devoted mother and wife. She was employed at Canadian General Tower for 29 years before retiring in 1990. We will always remember her love of music and beautiful singing voice. A Funeral Service will take place on Monday, February 9, 2014 at Coutts Funeral Home, 96 St. Andrews Street, Cambridge (519-621-1650) at 1:00 p.m. with a period of visitation one hour prior. There will be a gathering and reception at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 121 after the service. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in Maria’s memory. Special thank you for the kindness and compassion of the nursing staff of Cambridge Memorial Hospital during Maria’s last days.
