I know this message is somewhat belated, but I was moved today to reach out to Mr. Emberson to thank him, and ony just became aware of his passing.
I just listened to a rousing rendition of Beethoven's 5th, and memories of CCVI band practices and performances came flooding back to me.
Bob was truly inspirational, and instilled in me a lifelong love and appreciation for music of all kinds.  Playing percussion for him at school and in various City bands in the area that he would drag us out to brought growth to me beyond that which I could comprehend at the time.  And I know that I was only one of countless lucky students.
Thank you so much, Mr. E.  RIP.

I have belatedly learned of Mr. Emberson's passing...as a former Centennial Music Knight, he was one of my most memorable teachers. His humour & wit brought fun & laughter to every early morning band practice and he gave me a lifelong gift - the appreciation of so many music genres, that I try to instill in my children today. He spread his love of music throughout the local community and even abroad (memories of selling oranges/grapefruit to fundraise for a band trip). I can only hope that he knew how far-reaching his gift was and how often I and so many of his former students have thought of and spoken of him throughout our lives.  What a wonderful, talented and memorable man, who will truly be missed.

I just saw this and I am so saddened.  Some of my best memories of my time at Centennial in the 70's were from my time in music class and this wonderful man who was one of the best teachers we could ever have had.

One of my fondest memories was during a Music Knights Concer, they played the theme from Hogan's Heroes.  Bob ducked down behind the podium and when he stood up he was wearing the old pointed German helmet that was shown in the opening credits of the TV show.

I regret that I never had the opportunity to stop in to Centennial and see him more often than I did.  His stories and anecdotes were never ending and were a joy to listen to.

I played in the police/red chevron boys band and the Galt Kiltie band with Bob in the 40s and 50s. We had great times together especially on our weekly trips to the Galt band rehearsals and hanging out in the Preston Legion after parades. I was looking riser if he was on Facebook when I discovered obituary, what an impressive list of test umiaks from his friends and students. I' m sorry he's gone and that we never made contact for years. I remember him as being a great guy.

I met Bob back in 1985, when we were both playing in a dixie band at the Holiday Inn on Fairway Road in Kitchener.  He made me laugh so much, my stomach hurt! A true inspiration as a musician and as a friend.  I later joined the military band branch, met his two sons and have been working with them since the early 90's.  I'll always have wonderful memories of Bob!

I'm so sorry to hear that we have lost Mr. E.  I think of him everytime I play my trombone or listen to "In the Mood".  I'm still trying to figure out the ingredients to a 1-2-3!  I will never forget weekend BBQs at his home in Aberfoyle or climbing up into the Church Organ's loft to play.  He always had the greatest lines too! I only got to meet him a few brief times, but have, and have had the extreme pleasure of working with 3 of his children.  Their attitude towards life, musicianship, senses of humour, compassion and friendship are nothing but a testament to the person Bob was, and the influence he had on his family. Like so many others, I have been thinking of Bob every day since hearing about his passing. I knew Bob for at least 40 years, thanks to my father, Fred Budd, who was a fine clarinetist and band conductor. They were very good friends as a result of their unstoppable passion for music and their great energy for teaching and sharing their talents. Over many years, they earned the respect of countless other musicians, notably in the Cambridge Concert Band and The Wellington Winds. They also played a lot of 'dance jobs' together and enjoyed gathering with a handful of musical friends to have fun playing Dixieland music and favourite old standards. To hear Bob play an oldie like 'Sunnyside of the Street' or 'Ain't Misbehavin' on slide trombone always brought a smile to my face. Indeed, for the rest of my life, I know I will always think of Bob when I hear the lovely sounds of a trombone. Oh, what a legacy!
We can only hope there's a band in heaven. 
Lillian and family, I'm sure you feel incredibly honoured that Bob made such a lasting impression on so many people. He was loved. And he'll always be remembered and admired.

Bob was my music teacher and so much more. Though I haven't seen him in thirty years I can honestly say he was one of the most influential men in my life. My thoughts are with his family.  I look forward to seeing him again one day.

Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss.  I just learned of Mr. Emberson's passing this evening.  He inspired me in so many ways that extended far beyond the classroom.  Through his dedication to all of his students, we saw the world by traveling abroad, but for me, I my eyes were opened to a world filled with creativity.

I remember that he told us that he hoped that we would have a lifelong love of music after we left his classroom, and I know that he accomplished that and so much more.  I find myself using many of his words and ideas when I try to explain to others why it's important to believe in your own creativity.

I was just informed, by my brother Eugene, of the passing of "the best teacher that [we] ever had", Mr. Bob Emberson. It has been a number of years since I last picked up a tuba, longer since I last met Mr. and Mrs. Emberson at a Central Band concert in Ottawa, and even longer since I graduated from CCVI, but I still have a great appreciation for music; and whenever I hear military band music on the radio, it brings back great memories of Music Knights. I owe this all to Mr. Emberson, who not only taught us how to play the instruments, but instilled in us an appreciation for music of all types and genres, from the classics to the current (for the mid-1980s) pop and movie tunes.

Bob Emberson is a great man who I will miss. I hope that my own son will be able to find a music teacher to match Mr. Emberson.

I've seen Bob over the years at various gigs. He asked me about my playing, years after I spent time in his school band. I have nothing but the fondest memories of Bob and the time I spent with him at Centennial. He inspired me to push myself a little harder as only a great teacher can do. He treated me as a friend and sometimes as an equal sharing his insights as we drove in his VW Rabbit to rehearsals in Cambridge and Kitchener. His love of music became mine and I thank him terribly for that amazing gift.

Dear Lillian and the Emberson Family,

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Bob.  Whenever I think of him, I have so many fond memories of Centennial and the Music Knights.  He was always the "spark" that kept the kids excited about music.  Who else could convince students to faithfully get up early week after week for band practice?!?  His playfulness with his trombone and his "whistling" to get our attention always made me smile!  Of course, we all enjoyed his many jokes, smiles, and laughter (although our graduating class did present him with a new joke book as he did reuse a lot of jokes of the years!)  His commitment to the music program and to kids at the school was legendary!  His love of Dixieland Jazz inspired me and others in our cohort to be a part of the Dixieland Jazz band for 3 years!  Some of the best times at high school revolved around music opportunities and events that Mr. Emberson created, including a band tour of Germany and Belgium in the 1980s.  

Bob Emberson will be missed by many but will not be forgotten.

I am so very sorry to here about the passing of Bob. Although our pathes haven't crossed for many years, I will always remember Bob's energy and relentless sense of humour. His countless musical stories of decades past embellished with his quick wit and puns were always a sheer delight to listen to. Many of Bob's sayings lived on in my own teaching career.
A true family man, musician, and engaging soul. I am happy that I had a chance to meet Bob.

I was very sad to hear of Mr. Emberson's passing.   Mr E inspired in me through Music Knights a passion for the Euphonium , music, leadership and the music community which I continue to this day. Tonight I had the honour of being present at James Gordon's presentation of the Guelph Youth Music Centre Wall of Fame plaque for Mr Emberson as a great Music Educator and I'm so glad to know that I am not alone in  realizing what a significant impact he made.  Mrs. E and family, my thoughts are with you.

High school can be a tough place, but not when you had a teacher like Mr E.  5 years of music classes, band, band trips and Music Knights, were always made fun because of Mr E's passion for his students.  

I've told my family many wonderful stories of my years at Centennial, and Mr E figured prominently in many of those tales.  He taught me lessons about music and about life.

I will remember him with fondness.

Mr Emberson was one of my favourite teachers at Centennial. I have so many fond memories of our Music Knight BBQs in Arkell and our band trip to Germany in 1985. He sparked a true appreciation for music in me which is rekindled as I see my own daughters playing in their high school bands.
My condolences to his family. A teacher like Mr E will always hold a special place in his students' hearts.

Dear Lillian and Family,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time.  Doreen and I were shocked when Bruce Lemon called this week and told us Bob had passed away.  We were looking forward to seeing both of you at the Junior Band Reunion the end of this month.  

So many good memories --- walking to Junior Band rehearsal and back home again with Bob and brother Fred;  our brass quartet rehearsals -- Bob, myself, Bud Huth, Bill Galbraith, which usually Bob had us in stitches; the Band competitions, solo festivals, Don Singular and the Les King orchestra;  -- so many aspects of my musical life, growing up in Guelph at that time included Bob.

In later life our paths took us in different directions, but after the Junior Band 50th Reunion and the yearly get togethers each June a long and happy friendship was renewed.

As you probably know, I had to have major surgery myself just recently and will not be able to be with you on Saturday.  As I already have said our thoughts and prayers will be with you!

Bob was a good trombone/baritone player, fine musician and teacher and a good friend.  We all loved him very much and he will be sorely missed!

I was very sorry to learn of Bob's passing. We shared many years on the staff of the Centennial Collegiate. He was a lovely man, who often went out of his way to be helpful to me. My deepest condolences to Lillian and the children.

Dear Julie and Family....

I have just heard of Mr. Emberson's passing.  I would be there to express my appreciation for the massive gift of music he gave me but I live in British Columbia now and I'm too far away.

I have told countless people over many years how special Mr. Emberson was.  To this day, I am a musician with the musical skills/understanding to make my daily joy possible because of Mr. Emberson.  

A few weeks ago on Facebook, I quoted him by saying that I had "fried airballs and oxygen sauce" for breakfast....something he would volunteer many early mornings during high school band practice.

I loved Mr. Emberson and I will always love him.  He was a kind, funny, encouraging, father-like person in my life and, even when I was just a teen, I truly admired, loved and respected him.  

I can't tell you how this affects me.....I will say, one more time, I truly loved him.  I hope I have helped in the tiniest of ways to let you know that his enthusiasm, spirit and love will most certainly live on forever in the people's lives he touched.  It doesn't stop with us.  I teach guitar and encourage others in their musical endeavors always with him in mind.....my nephews are musicians now, too.

I don't know what else to say......my heart is heavy but it is still full and Mr. Emberson had a lot to do with that.

My condolences to the Emberson family. I have continued to bump into Steve over the years at Remembrance Day ceremonies in Ottawa (our daughters sang in the Ottawa Children's Choir). Lots of great memories come back reading through the comments and names of people that we've lost touch with - little saying that Mr E. used regularly. What a great gift music teachers give to the world. Music has remained an important part of my life and always will, so thanks Mr E., and hugs to all of your family.

So many memories of "Mr. Emberson."  He was cool; he was funny; he was talented.  Most of all he cared about the students and was passionate about what he did.  One of the proudest moments of high school for me was when we (the band) won the Kiwanis festival.  His passion lives on in the hundreds of people who played music with him.  "Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades" as he used to say.  He wasn't close to being the best music teacher around - he WAS the best.  My sincere condolences to all of you.

I studied music and played in the band at Centennial throughout high school. As I write this, I find myself smiling at the many fond memories of Mr. Emberson.  His love of music fed my love of music.  He was also one of the funniest and most entertaining teachers I have ever had.  Thank you to the Emberson family for sharing him with all of us for so many years.

I will always always remember my Uncle Bob from when I was a child.  He had a Barbershop Quartet that practiced at my Grandma's house.  I remember the beautiful sound of them singing "Mr. Sandman, Bring Me a Dream" as I drifted off to sleep.  It is, and always will be, one of my fondest childhood memories.  R.I.P. I was a French Horn player at Centennial for five years with Mr. Emberson.  It's difficult to put into words how he was able to create such a high calibre of musicianship amongst kids who were just getting their start in music.  The Music Knights band won every competition we entered.  We were great because he was great.  I continue to play the horn to this day and remember a lot of his funny "rules".  "Sit up in your chair like a banana, not like a grapefruit." And when a student dared blame their instrument for a bum note, "A good carpenter never blames his tools."  He was fun, funny, and  expected the best.  Mr. Emberson is one of a handful of teachers who have had an impact on my life beyond school. They don't make them like him anymore.  Thanks for everything Mr. E. Condolences to Mrs. Emberson and the family.

Mr. Emberson was a role model to many of us. His energy, positive attitude and enthusiasm was absolutely genuine. He was my brother's first music teacher and in a unique way, deeply affected my life as well. Condolences to Bob's family, friends and all who loved him. He truly was a great guy.

I took music in Grade nine because I thought it would be fun. It was, but Mr. Emberson challenged us nonetheless. In his own unique way he inspired many. I went on to study music at university solely because of his influence.

In later years, it fun to share the stage with Bob, my friend, and my mentor, but sadly only once. I will never forget that night.

A couple of years ago, my sons, both of whom are the product of high school music programmes, bought a turntable to play LP's that still kick around our house.....we found the CCVI Music Knights record from 1976 and the boys were blown away by the standard of the band/choirs on this little piece of musical history.   To me, this recording says it all...Bob was a gold standard musician/teacher with a heart of gold...RIP Mr. Emberson.

To Lillian, Theresa, Julie and the rest of the Emberson family - my condolences, I was a Centennial CVI student who was inspired by Bob.  Following graduation in 1984 I have kept in touch during my years away in the US.  For the few years I returned to Guelph in the early 2000's Bob recruited me to play trombone in the Cambridge band.  I remember a lovely visit here in Knoxville, a few years ago when Bob and Lillian were returning from a Florida trip.  it was lovely to host them both in my home after all those years of friendship.  To all the great memories, the inspiration of young people including myself, the appreciation of music, the talent - that was Bob Emberson.  You will be sadly missed and your Guest Book will attest to that legacy.

Bob Emberson changed my life starting at the age of 8. He was my first music teacher (trumpet). I will always cherish my years as a Music Knight with Mr. E. He was part of the reason I went on to study Music in university. He will be missed by so many. My condolences to his family and friends.

I was deepely saddened to hear of Bob's passing. What a music legacy he leaves behind. He touched the lives of so many. Wow.  My deepest sympathies.  Bob was perhaps my Father Fred Leadston's best friend and I'm terribly sorry to hear of his passing.  From the time as I was a kid up until the last time we saw each other at Dad's funeral, Bob was always smiling and joking.  The Man Upstairs has one hell of a Trombone section.

Mr. Emberson was not only my favourite teacher from high school, he was an extremely important and influential person in my development as a human being. In my years in band with him I learned more than I can even begin to explain. I have so many fond memories of him and stories that I can tell.  He was a wonderful musician, a comedian and a role model.  He inspired, encouraged and understood me and he could wiggle his ears!  Thank you Mr. Emberson for everything!

What a legacy Bob, so many young hearts and minds tuned into the love of music!  Without the fans Bob, you and I and all musicians would not enjoy the magic of playing on the stand. Thank you for this Bob, and all the work you put in for musicians at the AF of M.  As life would have it, on Sunday, the very day you "moved upstairs", Dave Romagnoli and I were jamming at the Jasstime Festival in Alexandria Bay, and Basin Street Blues was called,---- so many times we've blown that "good old good one" and enjoyed that big bone sound of yours!  We will always call this tune in your lasting memory.  Thank you for leading us to "heaven on earth".  Keep on Jazzn' Bob!

For at least those years I was a Music Knight, Mr. E. turned me into a morning person. There was no way I wanted to be late for practice! Mr. E's energy, humour, and musicianship were inspiring but, moreover, his genuine pride in and fondness for us allowed many of his students to find a "home" during our high school experience. I've taken his many lessons with me for more than 35 years and I'll carry them with me for the years to come. To all the family--Lillian, Mike, and Julie in particular--you are very much in my thoughts and prayers.

I will never forget him coming down to our shop, paper in hand, holding it over my head.  "You're under a rest".  My trombone case also has a lasting piece of advise..."good musicians always carry a pencil!"

Bob has been a great mentor in my musical career over the many years starting with the 11th Field Artillery Band in 1967 and as a fellow High School music teacher with the Wellington Board of Education. He was a great Euph player who always made music FUN and made everyone laugh at life.

Bob always brought much joy to our jazz club on Saturday afternoons. My friend Rodger and I always had a bet whether or not Bob was going to sing 'Basin Street' or 'Sheik of Calgary'. It ended up about 50/50. We'll miss him.

My all-time favourite Mr. Emberson saying is about counting to 20 without taking your shoes off. :)  What great times we had in music class!  May you rest in peace.

Bob will be missed by all of us who had the opportunity to spend time with him. His sunny disposition and willingness to offer advice made him a great friend and a great addition to any group, including members of the Cambridge Concert Band and Cambridge Legion who will miss him always. Best wishes and condolences to Lillian and his family.

He was quite a guy!  I will miss his smile in church.  He always was a full of laughter and lived his life. He enjoyed everyone and was full of life.

Mr. Emberson made us all laugh and was a great support to the Ajax hockey team and Daniel's team mates.  His great booming voice cheered the boys on. It was a pleasure teaching at Centennial with Bob for the first 15 years of my career.  He was the first person I met on the day of my interview back in 1982.  His wonderful sense of humour set me at ease....I will never forget that.  I enjoyed playing with Bob and Lillian in the Cambridge band....and of course we all remember those fantastic corn roasts out at the Arkell homestead.  Bob's passion for his music students at Centennial were what set him apart. We all loved his sense of humour and sharp wit!  You will be missed, Bob.  hugs, Anne (Cassidy) Secord

Bob ensured that I learn my 'doubles' throughout my time at Centennial. I'll always remember his love of music, life, and what was most important to him...his family.

I will always remember Mr. Emberson's stories, jokes and music. His classes and practices were some of my favourite time spent at Centennial. He is missed.

I only knew Bob for a short time with the Cambridge Concert Band, but I feel lucky to have met a person so full of life and passion for music. He will be missed.

Very sorry to hear of Bob's passing. His jokes and joviality was an inspiration, in addition to his musicality as a fellow bandsman. He'll sorely be missed in the local musical community.

"Where's your horn?"  Too many wonderful memories Mr E.  Yes, saying Bob is still weird after all these years. Thanks for giving me the gift of music at CCVI, and the after band beer with Cambridge and Ayr Bands.

Bob was not only a fellow musician but a close friend since our childhood and Guelph Police Boys Band days.  I will miss his friendship,sense of humour and our reminiscing about the good old Military Band days.  We'll meet again old buddy!

Bob's passing is a loss for so many.  He was one of the most jovial people I have ever met and certainly left a mark on me and so many other musicians.

Goodbye my dear friend.  I will miss your beautiful soul, your wonderful musicianship, and even your silly jokes.  Every time I catch myself tapping my foot a little too much I shall think of you. Thank you for your advice, your support, and above all, your friendship.

Bob lived his life doing what he enjoyed, making music. He participated, taught, directed and inspired other musicians around him as long as I knew him. His love for music was contagious and as a result every member of his family became a musician, and not just a musician, but a good musician. His type of humor, went hand in hand with his time in the military, as so many military and ex-military musicians share the same type of humor, however Bob was a master at it. Although a jokester, Bob took his music seriously, and was uncompromising when it came to playing something correctly.
Bob will be remembered as one of the musical legends in the Guelph, Cambridge area. Respectfully submitted, George Rose

Mr. Emberson sparked my love of music and travel when he took Centennial C.V.I. Senior band to Germany.  It was such an amazing experience and gave me one of my fondest memories... Mr. Emberson cancelled the visit to the music museum so that we could do a brewery tour!  He will be greatly missed!

Bob was a spark of energy and a mentor to generations of aspiring musicians at Centennial CVI. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to be one of them.

Lots of people were thinking about Bob at the Cambridge Concert Band practice tonight! We will certainly miss seeing him in his spot in the trombone section and hearing his wonderful playing. Most of all though, I think we will miss his funny comments and jokes. He certainly had a way of livening up band practice and keeping us laughing. What a wonderful musical contribution Bob made to this community through his playing and conducting in so many bands over the years! His was truly "a life well lived".

My sincerest condolences to Bob's family. Bob always greeted me with a smile and a story. I know he will be greatly missed.

I will forever remember Bob who I had the privilege to play in the same band (Cambridge Concert Band) for many years. Bob always had a smile on his face and you couldn't help but smile along with him, or laugh for that matter.

I always enjoyed visiting with Bob when he came over to see Jackie. He always had a big smile and we loved to share a joke or two. Ruth and I will miss him very much.

I am so very sad to hear of Mr. Emberson's passing.  He was one of my favorite teachers - an inspiration and a great lover of music.  I loved to play in his classes and later, in our high school band.  It never failed that when he felt the mood, Mr. Emberson would break out his own trombone and play along, or sing during a concert.  His enthusiasm was infectious.  I also owe him a huge debt of gratitude for so faithfully helping to organize those band trips to Europe.  I was a lucky recipient, and so he taught me not just the joy of playing music with others, but that the world was wider than my own backyard.  Respect, Sir!

I was saddened to hear of Bob's passing. I always smile when I think of him. I laugh when I remember how he use to yell out "Stewart, quit tapping your foot" during band.  He was a great teacher. Bob had a zest for life, a great laugh and a contagious smile.  He will be missed.  I hope it gives comfort to know you are in our thoughts and prayers.
