He leaves behind his loving and much adored wife of 47 years, Margaret (nee Power); his treasured daughters Yolonda White (nee Devereaux), Natalie Barnes; son-in-law Leonard Barnes; chosen daughter Chandrania Biswas of India; four grandsons Charles (Amy), Joshua, William, and Desmond; one precious granddaughter Rion; three great-grandchildren Zackerey, Adrian, and Nevaeh; his siblings including only brother Denis of New Brunswick, “big” little sister Patricia Murphy (Keith) of New Brunswick, and devoted baby sister Elizabeth of Alberta. Tom’s much-loved family-in-law John (Violet), Tom (Nancy), Leo (Pauline), Cecilia (Jeff), and Coleen (Dale). Tom is also missed by many cousins and relatives, including nieces and nephews whom he welcomed at any time with open arms just so he could laugh and tease them and a large family of dear friends.
He is predeceased by his mother Elizabeth (nee Griffiths) and father Denis Devereaux; his in-laws Thomas Power, Cecilia Power (John Ryan), Paddy Power; and grandson James White. Also predeceased by his lifetime pal Keith Sullivan.
Besides Tom’s sweetheart Margaret whose hand he constantly held, his daughters and grandchildren were his true treasures in life. Nothing was ever too much to ask from Daddy/Poppy, he was quite content to sit in the background and watch with delight and give anything within his powers to give.
Tom was a lover of old movies, big band music, cooking and eating (sometimes concoctions we weren’t ever sure what it was), and of course his scotch whiskey. He couldn’t wait for Fridays from May to October to head to the campgrounds – “Pack er up, and let’s go!” There he basked in nature and competed with his brothers-in-laws to “go to chair” (sleep), before the campfire first. Then sit in the dark on the deck holding hands with his true love, Margaret as they had their nightcap.
The one true pride of Tom’s accomplishments in life was being honoured to serve with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment for over seven years and deployed with the United Nations in Egypt in 1976.
Tom was a man of few words, he allowed his actions to speak for him. His kind heart knew no boundaries. He touched many lives, both young and old alike. The examples of goodness in his actions for family and friends was the way he led his life.
Tom received very extensive care over the last three years from medical personnel – to mention them all would be impossible, but especially noted is the caring staff of Cambridge Memorial Hospital, from doctors, nurses, porters, techs, and EVS staff. Special thank you to Medical Day Care team, led by Dr. Gaderia and his favourite nurse, Tara. His home nurse Danielle, PSW’s of Care Partners, Dr. Swahi and nurse Jeremy of London Sciences, Dr. MacNamara his cardiologist, and our family doctor and friend who was constant in his care, Dr. Shaheen Morar.
On Thursday, December 18, 2025 Tom’s family are inviting friends together in a Celebration of Life at the Cambridge Navy Club, 30 Cambridge Street, Cambridge ON from 1:00 – 3:00 pm for visitation with the family, and at 3:00 pm there will be a time of prayer followed by a luncheon for those gathered. Please, no flowers – in lieu, consider donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
The night sky has been blessed with a new bright star and heaven has gained one of the greatest of all times. Rest in peace, my Babe.
