She will be missed enormously by her sisters Mary and Margaret. She will also be missed by her nephews; Edward (Pauline), Harold (Sylvia), John (Bernadette), Douglas and her nieces; Mary Davies and Margaret Mantler.
Wilma’s early years were spent on a farm on Myers Road. When she was 7.5 years old her father died from blood poisoning and the family moved to Branchton, where she enjoyed a wonderful community life. Upon graduation from elementary school, Wilma attended G.C.I. She went on to Hamilton Normal School and then to Toronto for her primary specialist certificate. Some years later she qualified to become a teacher librarian. Wilma’s teaching experience included 2 years in Niagara Falls and many years in Galt/Cambridge at Central, St. Andrews, Dickson, Tait Street, Blair Road and Highland. In between the above assignments she went on exchange to Kilmarnock, Scotland. During that year she attended a Garden Party with Queen Elizabeth, mother of the present Queen. In addition to Scotland exchange she went with the United Church of Canada to India as a short term education missionary. She was stationed in Landour, Missouri. Wilma was involved with music as well. She sang in Central and First United Church Choirs as well as St. Luke’s Community Choirs and Preston Operatic Choir. She also played the organ and led the choirs at St. John’s United, First United and St. James and St. Paul’s Lutheran Churches. Wilma was a member and past president of the local chapter of Retired Teachers of Ontario as well as a member of Cambridge Women’s Probus Club. Traveling has been one of her pleasures – in Canada from Coast to Coast in many of the states of the United States including Hawaii, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji, Europe, Asia, Africa and Carribbean. In her travels to some very distressing areas of the world led her over forty years ago to become involved with Foster Parents Plan of Canada.
A special thank you to all of Wilma’s loving caregivers over the years – particularly PSW’s Jean and Eva, as well as her caring neighbours Mary, Jane and Norm.
