Albert A. Neilson Jr.

Albert “Al” A. Neilson, Jr., 92, of Mechanicsburg, formerly of New Cumberland, passed away Tuesday August 15, 2017. He was born April 8, 1925 in Philadelphia, son of the late Albert and Elsie Mae (Knowles) Neilson, Sr.

Al was a graduate of Tufts University, with a Bachelors of Naval Science Engineering and a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a veteran of the US Navy serving in WW II and the Korean Conflict.

Al was retired from Berg Electronics/DuPont where he was an executive in both the Sales and Engineering Departments. Al started his career as an engineer with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. He held several patents and was the designer in 1951 of a radically new passenger subway system, which we know today as the moving sidewalks in airports. He was also part of the design team for the updating of the Senate subway system.

He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Neilson in 2013; his brothers Richard and Robert Nielson.

Surviving are his children: Marilyn (Alex) Minoff, Deborah (Edward) Maff; Christine (Richard) Topalian; Cynthia (Antonio) Felisberto and Douglas Neilson. Also, his step-children: Pam (Scott) Messenger; Greg (Jane) Long; Debra (Max) Utterback; Jackie Long and Patsi Long. Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 Monday, August 21, 2017 at the Neill Funeral Home, Camp Hill, visitation will be one hour prior to service. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
