Caroline was born on January 24, 1939, in York, PA to the late James R. and Lottie (Brenneman) Shryock. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 45 years, Lee R. Conrad, in 2008. She was a graduate of West York High School, class of 1956, and Susquehanna University, class of 1960, where she met Lee.
Surviving Caroline are her daughters Amy Conrad of Utah and Susanne Conrad of Alaska; her brother, Steve Shryock & wife Ann, and sister, Martha Himler & husband Richard, all of Mechanicsburg; her close cousin, Jim Brenneman & wife Mary Jane, of Ambler; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Caroline’s life was filled with family, music, faith, and adventure; She was a kind, compassionate and dedicated woman and one of the kindest souls you could ever meet. Her daughter oftentimes describes her as “being cut from Angel cloth”.
Her influence on family, friends, students and to all those who knew her will always be treasured. As a business teacher, she was respected by students and approached years later by students remarking how she had helped them prepare for life and their careers.
There was no mistaking that Caroline was a beautiful and talented piano player. She loved playing for her father while he sang his favorite hymns. Her family regularly requested their favorite songs from her extensive list of hymns, show tunes and classics. For many years she served as church organist and was requested to play at weddings and special events.
Caroline loved to travel and visit new places and described every trip as a “new adventure”. She welcomed the opportunity to move to North Carolina and later California. She would study maps and local history and then excitedly go “exploring” to see what there was to learn.
As she aged gracefully, she loved spending quality time with Otis, her family’s African Grey parrot. They would sit together for hours, talking and taking naps together. Otis brought Caroline a great deal of joy and laughter and she treasured that time very much.
