It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Frances “Franky” James. She was a woman of boundless energy, whimsy and love—especially with her family. Franky was born January 8, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland; she was the daughter of the late Frank and Millie Kanovich. She was a graduate of Coal Township High School in Shamokin, PA (class of 1960).
Franky was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Ralph “Jess” James; her son, Matthew James; and her grandson, Tony Miles. She is survived by her sons Steven James and Mark James and daughters Michelle Miles (Jon) and Alyson Urban (Joe). Nine grandchildren Kristin James, Derek James, Mark James, Jr., Eric James, Rachel Mandrusiak, Leah King (Tommy), Taylor Miles Hopkins (Jacob), Luke Johns and Laney Johns. Four great grandchildren James Mandrusiak, Adrian King, Avery King and Jackson King. Two brothers John Kanovich (Sandy) and Ron Kanovich (Debbie); along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that love her dearly.
Franky transitioned out of this life on April 12, 2026. Through her journey of 83 years, she was proud to dedicate 47 of them to Giant Food stores as a Store Employment Associate. Previously, she brought her joyful spark to Harrisburg Hospital (formerly the Polyclinic Hospital). Faith was a pillar of Franky’s life. She was a devoted parishioner of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Camp Hill.
We will remember a life lived with immense love, a constant sense of care and humor, and a desire to cherish every moment and fill it with good food. She had a deep affection for spending time with her grandchildren and family and also loved traveling with her husband from the deserts of Arizona to the waters of Alaska.
We say goodbye for now to a vibrant woman, loving wife, remarkable mother and doting grandmother. As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate a life fully lived in the true essence of Franky.
A public viewing will be held at Neil Funeral Home in Camp Hill on Thursday, April 23 from 5–7pm. On April 24th, there will be a viewing from 10–11am with Mass following immediately at 11 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Camp Hill.
Donations may be made to Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Camp Hill or Carolyn Croxton Lane Hospice Residence in Harrisburg.
