Born in Wilkes-Barre on March 16, 1932, he was the son of Martin and Helen Brown. Soon after the death of his father, he enlisted in the US Army when he turned 17.
An accomplished marksman, he served as a guard at Spandau Prison where he guarded Rudolph Hess and other Nazis awaiting trial for war crimes committed during World War II.
After returning home, he married Emma Jane Stritzinger and celebrated 70 years of marriage in October 2023. They raised three children, Sharon, Karen, and David. Harold retired in 1991 after a 35-year career at the former Bethlehem Steel Corp plant in Bethlehem.
A true family man, he dragged the kids to Deer Lake to be entertained by Muhammad Ali as he trained. Paydays meant a trip to McDonalds. Trips to the drive-in theater included a large block-size Hershey bar for the kids to split and Sunday church services were followed by a trip to Malone and Sons Bakery.
After retiring and moving to Camp Hill, he and Jane enjoyed cruising and watching their grandkids play sports. He was famous for plopping his lawn chair behind home plate and urging many an ump to use his good eye…and not getting tossed.
Always the kidder, he was loaded with the proverbial corny “Dad” jokes. At the Caddy Shack, he always asked for a thick slice of onion for his dollar burger, to the point where the chef brought out an entire onion with the sides squared off.
Even with his health declining, he never lost his sense of humor, even with his doctors and nurses.
Harold is survived by his wife, Jane, daughters Sharon Brunovsky (Joe) of Whitehall, Karen Cozzoli (Frank), of Camp Hill and son David of Ocean View, Del. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Kristin Kennedy (Josh) of Phoenixville, Ryan Lymych (Courtney) of Dunedin, Fla., Janie Cazzoli of Camp Hill, Nicholas Brown (Michelle) of Palmerton, Melissa Kulp (Gary) of Easton, Joseph Brunovsky (Aurora) of Bethleham and three great-grandchildren, Domenick and Lillie Brown of Palmerton and Oakley Brunovsky of Bethlehem.
Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to the American Heart Association.
The family would also like to express their thanks to Hampden Twp. EMS, Hampden Twp. Police, Firefighters and Penn State Life Lion for their life saving efforts.
