He was born October 9, 1925 in Arnold City, PA, son of the late Ernest and Anna (Yeardley) Barnes.
He served in the US Navy in WWII aboard the USS Iowa from 1944 to the end of the war in 1945. He witnessed the signing of the peace treaty in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. He was a graduate of Waynesburg University in Waynesburg, PA with a BS in History in 1953. He was a teacher of US History and Government at East Pennsboro High School from 1953 until his retirement in 1983. He was elected to the East Pennsboro Borough Board of Commissioners and served as President of the Board for several years. He spent many summers as the manager of the West Shore YMCA summer camp in the 1960's and 1970's. Harry was a member of the Camp Hill Presbyterian Church since 1962. He was active in the Masons as Past Worshipful Master of Perry Lodge #458 in Marysville, PA: The Tall Cedars where he was Past Grand Tall of the Harrisburg Forest; Scottish Rite – 33 degree; and a member of the Zembo Shrine.
Preceded in death by his wife Helen Barnes who died in 2013 after 67 years of marriage.
Survived by, Son John Barnes and his wife Elizabeth Barnes of Cypress, TX, granddaughter Amy Dunn and her husband Dr. Stephen Dunn of Wexford, PA, granddaughter Chelsea Barnes of Cypress, TX, grandson John Andrew Barnes of Houston, TX, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-granddaughters.
Funeral service will be held at 12:00 Saturday, August 21, 2021 at the Camp Hill Presbyterian Church, 101 N. 23rd St. Camp Hill, with viewing one hour prior to service. Interment Rolling Green Memorial Park.
