Joan Lee Turo, of Camp Hill, passed away on July 26, 2015 surrounded by the warm and loving support of her family. Born on November 11, 1931 and raised in Enhaut, PA, Joan was the daughter of the late Jacob and Anna (Rose) Gluntz. She graduated from Swatara High School (Class of 1949) and Harrisburg Hospital School of Nursing (1953).
She worked professionally as a registered nurse for over 30 years, many of those years at both Harrisburg and Holy Spirit Hospitals, and then volunteered time after her retirement. A convert to Catholicism when married in 1954, she was a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd in Camp Hill for the last 44 years. As an active church member, she served as an adult choir member, as well as a small group fellowship host and retreat program team leader with her husband. She also served as a softball coach, Cub Scout den mother and Girl Scout leader supporting her children's activities.
Spending time in the company of her ever-growing family brought Joan her greatest joy! Surviving are her four children, Ron Turo, husband of Claire Fetterman; Noreen Turo Garney, wife of Robert Garney; Anthony Turo, husband of Maureen Miles; and Christine Turo-Shields, wife of Dave Turo-Shields; thirteen grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren (with two more on the way). She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John Turo, and her parents and three sisters, Catherine Petty, Emily Roe and Clara Farnsworth Matthews.
She enjoyed bowling with her husband John late into her senior years, along with backyard bird watching and completing jigsaw puzzles. She also loved anything purple! She had an incredibly generous spirit, giving to various charities as well as to anyone in need. She was especially supportive of her church and cancer-related charities.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 3435 Trindle Road, Camp Hill, with visitation at 6:00 pm one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Interment at Rolling Green Memorial Park will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the "American Cancer Society," the "Four Diamonds Fund" at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, or "Good Shepherd Catholic Church."
