He was born in Harrisburg, PA on December 26, 1933 to the late Joseph R. and Mary Kniley Stine. He was happily married to Alicia Diosdado Stine for 64 years.
Joe graduated from William Penn High School in 1950 and received a Bachelor of Science and Economics degree from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster in 1954. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.
Joe was a veteran with 30 years of service in the US Air Force and the Pennsylvania Air National Guard. He successfully completed the Air War College in Carlisle, PA and served as Adjutant, Personnel and Information Officer. In addition to his assigned duties, he wrote and published a book on the twenty five year history of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard. He was very proud of his military service and retired from the Air National Guard in the Grade of Brigadier General.
In his civilian life, Joe was President and Chief Executive Officer of the former Joe, The Motorists’ Friend, a family business of a forty-store chain of home and auto supplies, doing business in three states. A store in Harrisburg was known for the Santa Clause who gave “Good Conduct Medals” to the children.
He was extremely active in the community. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the former Merchants and Businessmen’s Mutual Insurance Company and of the Homeland Center. Other boards he served were the Harrisburg Hospital, the Harrisburg Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Harrisburg Academy and the advisory board of Dauphin Deposit Trust Company. He served for many years on the East Pennsboro Planning Commission. He was President of the Alumni Association of Franklin and Marshall College and was honored to receive the college’s Alumni Medal and to be named a Distinguished Alumnus.
He was a member of the Country Club of Harrisburg, the West Shore Country Club, and a former member of the Stone Harbor Golf Club.
He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Camp Hill.
Joe had a zest for life. He enjoyed playing golf (not very well), cruising the Susquehanna River from his cottage in Goldsboro, and traveling throughout the United States and Europe. He particularly enjoyed spending winters in Palm Desert, California. Joe loved entertaining and cooking for friends.
In addition to his wife, Alicia, he is survived by his daughter Anita Rash and her husband Ronald, his son Mark Kniley Stine and his wife Melanie, four grandchildren, Vesta Rash, Margaret Rash (Patrick Miller), Paul Stine and Meredith Stine, great-granddaughter Veronica Miller, and nieces Susan Rauch (Alan Cosenza) and Mary Matthews (Kevin). He was predeceased by his beloved son, Joseph Daniel Stine and his sister Mary Louise Rauch.
Viewing will be Monday, April 12, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Neill Funeral Home, 3401 Market St. Camp Hill.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday April 13, 2021 at Church of the Good Shepherd, 3435 Trindle Rd. Camp Hill, with a viewing to be held from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM at the church. Mass will be streamed live at www.thegoodshep.org, Interment will be at the East Harrisburg Cemetery. Reception will be immediately after the interment.
