Kwan Hee Won MD

Dr. Kwan H. Won, age 92, passed away on January 16, 2026 in Mechanicsburg. He was surrounded by loving family members in his final days before passing peacefully in the home

where he and his late wife Iney raised their four children. Before retirement in 2015, Dr. Won ran his private medical practice in Camp Hill as an ear, nose, and throat specialist and general

surgeon. At Johns Hopkins Medical School, Dr. Won was on the Medical Staff, as an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery for nearly 25 years, beginning in 1974. He had previously completed training at Johns Hopkins where he was Chief Resident of Otolaryngology. At Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, he was Department Chief of Otolaryngology

for eight of the 41 years he was on staff. He also served on the Medical Staffs of Harrisburg Hospital and Seidle Memorial Hospital. In 1992, Pennsylvania Governor Robert Casey appointed

Dr. Won to the State Board of Examiners in Speech Language and Hearing.

Born on March 31, 1933, in Gangwondo province, South Korea, Dr. Won served in the South Korean Army as a teenager during the Korean War. After being discharged with an injury, Dr. Won moved to Seoul to find his future. In a city devastated by war, he studied for his college entrance exam by candlelight in an abandoned building and always said he couldn’t believe it when he saw his name on the list of those admitted to Seoul National University for medical

study. Thus began a lifetime passion for medical science. During his studies, he met his late wife, Iney R. Won, who was a medical student at Sudo Women’s Medical College, now Korea University. Later, Dr. Won earned an opportunity to study at Johns Hopkins, and his wife and the two children he had at that time later followed him to the U.S.

Dr. Won was a talented artist who loved painting landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. He would sometimes dash off a quick drawing to explain difficult concepts to his children or to clarify

medical diagnoses to patients; he also left behind numerous drawings to illustrate how surgical instruments could be improved. His children benefited from his talents when he helped them with models and crafts for school projects. In his later years, he undertook the discipline of copying the entire Bible in his beautiful calligraphic hand – twice. In addition, Dr. Won was

passionate about classical music, and he sometimes could be heard humming arias from his favorite operas, which often moved him to tears. At age 50, he began piano lessons, and was filled with joy when he learned to play the second movement of Beethoven’s Pathétique

Sonata.

He lived a big life, approaching every endeavor with zeal, and he leaves a lasting imprint on those who knew him. Family members remember Dr. Won best for his tireless work ethic, relentless energy, and can-do optimistic enthusiasm. That held whether it came to his professional work, taking care of his home, or inspiring his wife and children with wonderful experiences.

Dr. Won and his late wife enjoyed traveling the world. A visit to Bordeaux with his family was a particular highlight because of his love of French wines. But there were many other highlights

that included alpine mountains, balmy islands, Nordic fjords, and city lights. The two of them also supported numerous organizations, including their church, Food Bank of Pennsylvania,

Disabled American Veterans, and schools including Phillips Academy, St. Paul’s School, Harvard University, and Johns Hopkins Medical School. Thanks to his deep passion for music, he also

supported the Metropolitan Opera and the Harrisburg Symphony.

After decades serving patients in the area, Dr. Won often was approached in public by former patients who remembered him as the doctor who performed surgery on them or a family

member. It happened in restaurants, the supermarket, the post office, and all around town. On one sad recent occasion of needing an ambulance, the EMT arrived and declared, “I know you.

You removed my tonsils.”

Dr. Won is survived by his children and their partners, Hoon and Celeste Won, Mimi and Warren Techentin, Julie Won and Wooksang Roh, and Daniel Won and Lisa Remlinger, along with six

grandchildren, Ainsley Roh, Nicholas Won, Adelaide Won, Nathaniel Won, Remick Techentin, and Larkin Techentin. He is also survived by his three sisters.

A public visitation will be held by the family at Neill Funeral Home in Camp Hill on Sunday, January 25, from two o’clock to four o’clock in the afternoon, followed by a private burial for

family on January 26. Details of a Memorial Celebration of Life planned for April will follow.
