Pat was born September 3, 1931 in Nanticoke, PA to the late Francis “Pete” Buckley and Gertrude Fertil Buckley.
She earned a B.S. from Misericordia College, and was immediately recruited to work in a research program in Detroit, where she contributed to the development of the Salk polio vaccine. In September of 1957 Pat married Dr. Stephen J. Herceg, to whom she was married for 60 years until his death in May 2017. Pat and her husband, Steve, were devoted members of Good Shepherd Church in Camp Hill, and for the past two year after moving to Bethany Village Pat was grateful for ministry visits from members of the St. Joseph’s Parish in Mechanicsburg. Steve’s medical practice was based in Harrisburg, and Pat enjoyed many years of service in the Harrisburg Hospital Medical Auxiliary and the Dauphin County Medical Auxiliary, filling various positions, including that of President in 1977-78.
She is survived by her daughters; Catherine Herceg Eikland and husband, Kjell, in Norway, and Patricia Herceg Ryan in North Carolina, as well as Pat’s brother, Peter Buckley and wife Judy in Virginia, and sister, Francis Marks, in Michigan. Pat is lovingly remembered by her five grandsons, Matthew Ryan (Maryland), Edward Eikland (California), John Eikland (Denmark), Christopher Ryan (Michigan), and Thomas Ryan (Maryland), and by her beloved three great grandchildren Amelia Ryan, Evelyn Ryan, and Haakon Eikland.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Neill Funeral Home in Camp Hill. In light of the restrictions on social gathering a memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Bethany Village Care Assurance Fund. Donations can be sent to the Asbury Foundation at 325 Wesley Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Donations can also be made online at www.TheAsburyFoundation.org.
