She was kind-hearted, encouraging, selfless, and a friend to all. Her family was her greatest passion and pursuit - in particular her 12 grandchildren! Cheering for the Canucks and playing Scrabble were a close second!
She was born in Hyas, Saskatchewan to Gilberta and Annie Locken. She was the youngest daughter of 10 children. She moved to Winnipeg at the age of 9 and lived there until meeting her husband, Walter Kirk. Shortly after their first child was born they moved to British Columbia. Many years and moves later, they settled in Campbell River, where the last of their 5 children was born and where Joan then resided for over 55 years.
On March 4, 1980, Joan's world was flipped upside down with the unexpected death of her husband. The Campbell River Baptist Church were quick to rally around her with their love and support, which continued for many, many years. She was forever grateful for all the kindness and generosity they bestowed on her and her family. She was blessed with many lifelong friends there, and it was such a joy for her to be able to serve the One who gave His life for here - teaching SUnday School or helping in nursery and countless hours in the kitchen washing dishes after an event. All with a smile on her face!
One of JOan's favourite Bible verses reads "Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. Four our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
Joan is survived by her brother Roger (Pat), sons Jim, Roger (Wendy), Andrew (Peggy), and daughters Barb (Robin) and Sandra (Dallas) and many adoring grandchildren.
A celebration of Life will be held on August 12 at 2pm Campbell River Baptist Church 260 Dogwood Street.
