Garth was born on a farm in Manitoba. The family moved to Alberta when Garth was eleven years old. In 1973, Garth began his career in the credit union system at Tuxedo Credit Union in Calgary and progressed to Chief Executive Officer. In 1989, Garth moved to Campbell River, accepting the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of Evergreen Savings Credit Union. In 2005, Garth led the successful merger Evergreen Savings, Comox Valley, and Coastal Community. Garth retired as President and CEO in 2009. Garth was involved in many community task forces over the years, a trustee for Gwa’sala-Nakwaxda’xw board, and a director of Stabilization Central Credit Union. Garth was a longstanding member of the Comox Valley Woodworkers, and more recently mentored the Campbell River Hospice Society board.
He is survived by his wife Judy, children Doug (Lisa), JoLynn (Peter), Paul (Amy), grandchildren Kaitlyn (Marc), Emily, Carolyn, Tyson, Andrew, Gabriella, and Jaxon. Garth was predeceased by daughter Sherri, sister Elphelda, and brother Blake.
Funeral Service will be held on May 9, 2023 at the Baptist Church at 2:00 pm. Donations may be made to Campbell River Hospice Society or a charity of your choice.
