Her parents, Josephine Bernice (Jo) (nee Stewart) and Albert Edward (Hank) Cameron, lived in Melita, Manitoba, and on the night of Sandy’s birth, a late winter blizzard prevented access to the hospital on the Canadian side of the border. The best option for a hospital birth was a tractor ride south of the border. Despite her American citizenship, Sandy spent her life in Canada.
Her brother Ted (Albert Edward Cameron) was born in 1944 and following his birth the family moved to Victoria, B.C., returning to the city where Hank and Jo met at Vic High in the 1920s. Following high school, Sandy attended Victoria College for one year before training as a registered nurse at the Royal Jubilee Hospital.
She met her husband Lorne during this time through mutual friends Ernie and Moira. Sandy and Lorne’s long and happy married life started in Duncan where Lori and Brian were born and included time in Vanderhoof and Dawson Creek where they welcomed Carol. They settled in Campbell River in 1973.
Sandy worked at the hospital in each of these places and ended her career working as a Home Care Nurse with the Campbell River Health Unit. Sandy was a caring nurse who embodied and promoted healthy living. She was famous for her home health remedies, particularly the dreaded mustard plaster.
Sandy was an avid golfer in adulthood, even having two holes in one, a feat she was very proud of. At cards and other games, Sandy was a cautious shark, slowly and steadily obliterating her opponents.
Sandy loved to spend time with her family and cherished her granddaughters Sophia and Madeline of whom she was always very proud.
She remained very active in her retirement years curling, playing golf and bridge and travelling with friends and family. Sandy was quietly generous, kind, supportive and accepting. She enjoyed a good laugh and the company of friends and never said a bad word about anyone. She was very well-loved and will be sorely missed.
Sandy is survived by Lorne, her husband of 60 years, her daughters Lori (Victoria) and Carol (Campbell River); son Brian and daughter-in-law Liz (Victoria); granddaughters Sophia and Madeline; her brother Ted, his wife Sandy and their children Ward and Ryan.
Sandy is also survived by Lorne’s sister Judy, brother-in-law Gord, sister-in-law Lois and their families.
She was predeceased by her parents and Lorne’s brother Jim.
The family would like to thank the nurses and care aides on the 3rd floor and Dr. Logan for their care and compassion.
Details for a Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Campbell River Hospital Foundation.
