

The Honorable Edmond P. Blanchard, Chief Justice of the Court Martial Appeal court of Canada and a member of the Federal Court, passed away after a short battle with cancer on June 27, 2014 at the Ottawa Hospital – General campus. He was 60 years old. Originally from Atholville, New Brunswick, Justice Blanchard completed his law degree at Dalhousie University and was called to the Bar of New Brunswick in 1979. He practiced law in Campbellton before being elected to the New Brunswick legislature where he held a number of ministerial appointments including Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Finance. In October 2000, he was appointed Judge of the Federal Court and ex officio member of the Federal Court of Appeal. In 2004 he was appointed Chief Justice of the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada.
Edmond will be deeply missed by all of his family and friends. Lovingly remembered by his brothers: Michael (Colline), Daniel (Diane), Bernard (Johanne), Mathew (Denise) and Vincent (Liette), his sister, Elizabeth (Etienne LeBoeuf,) and his seventeen nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his mother Rita Hughes, his father, John Blanchard, and his niece Christine.
Edmond leaves behind a legacy of public service, generosity and kindness.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica in Ottawa at 9:30 am on Friday July 4th 2014. A public viewing of the remains will be held in the Supreme Court Building in Ottawa on Thursday July 3rd between 4 and 7 pm.
A funeral mass will subsequently be held at Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes in Atholville, New Brunswick on Monday July 7th at 11 am. A viewing of the remains be held on Sunday July 6th at the Savoie Funeral Home from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm, also on Monday morning from 9:30 till time of funeral.
