Young Calvin was only three years old when his family relocated to Bakersfield California in 1939.
Calvin attended Lincoln School and Bakersfield High School. He loved music and sat first chair playing the saxophone in the Bakersfield Drillers Band.
Calvin moved to Los Angeles to live with his sister Mary and her family and worked various jobs until 1959. That same year, Calvin began his career with the County of Los Angeles Harbor General Hospital. It was at Harbor General, in 1961, Calvin met “his soul mate” Alberta West. On September 21, 1963 Calvin and Alberta were married. To this union two children were born: Courtney Louis and Christopher Lynch.
Calvin worked for The County of Los Angeles for over 30 years and retired from the Probation Department as a Juvenile Crew Instructor.
In 2002, Calvin rededicated his life to Christ. He attended New Direction Church of God in Christ and was an ordained Deacon. Being a deacon was a position he held near and dear to his heart; however, he loved to serve and work around the church. Calvin loved his church, the Lord, and the Word of God with his whole heart.
Calvin loved to play golf and he could fix almost anything. Calvin was a sports enthusiast and loved USC and the Lakers. Calvin was a good cook but his BBQ was the best you've ever tasted.
Calvin had a keen sense of humor, but when it was time to get down to business, he was definitely focused.
Calvin is survived by his beautiful wife of 50 years, Alberta Lynch; two sons Courtney (Evelyn), Chris (Pam) Lynch; three grandchildren Chris (Christy), Nicholas, and Esjire; one great grandson CJ. He is also survived by one brother, Willis Rollins, and a host of nieces, nephews, and church family.
Calvin also believed his friends were special people. They didn’t have his last name; however, they have been so close for so long, that he made them members of his family. On behalf of Calvin, we would also like to honor each of those special brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters we affectionately call his “Bootleg-wanna-be’s.” Calvin will truly be missed.
