Born on the 4th of July, this yankee doodle dandy loved America and he loved music. He was a father,
grandfather, son, brother, and uncle. He was a talented musician who loved to spread joy and happiness
through his passion for music.
Mike was born on July 4, 1952 at St. Francis hospital in Honolulu, Hawai’i. He grew up in Kaneohe, the oldest of 7 siblings (along with 5 step-siblings). His career in music started at an early age playing with the Kailua Phantoms. He could play anything but his favorite was Saxophone. In the 70’s he played in different states touring with a promo team for Aloha Airlines. One special gig in 1977 in Anchorage, Alaska he met Annette “Brandy” Gurley and not long after they had their son Michael Kalani Gomez. He loved boogie boarding and body surfing at his favorite spot at Sandy beach. He enjoyed spearfishing and would go so far in the ocean that you couldn’t see the shore. He played backup guitar for famous names such as Eddie Kakaula and Alan Akaka at the Ala Moana center in Honolulu. Throughout his life he drove a taxi all over Honolulu, sold timeshares, ran a window cleaning business, was a drug and alcohol counselor, and also a father to his three children: Kalani, Josh, and Keiko.
Mike had a rich community of friends and touched many lives. He was affectionately called by many
nicknames including Sax-man, Guppy, Papasan, Unkle Fuzzy, Hawaiian Mike, Happy Hawaiian, Big
Mike, Hawaiiano, Grandpa Piku, and Superstar. The title he carried most proudly was Dad. He will be
deeply missed.
