ALAN H. TAYLOR, 93, passed away on October 20, 2012. Alan Taylor was a graduate of Roxbury Memorial High School and earned his Bachelor of Arts at Boston University, and Master of Arts in Social Science at Calvin Coolidge College. His Master's thesis was on the "Importance of the Middle East in World Politics." Written in 1948, his thesis is just as appropriate today in 2012. He also attended Harvard University. In 1940, he entered the U.S. Civil Service and worked for the United States Postal Service, Government Printing Office, the Navy Department, and Veterans’ Administration. In his later years, he was employed by the Commonwealth of Mass. In 1949, he married Bertha Kaplan. He is survived by his wife Bertha, son Gerald Taylor and his wife Carol of Longmeadow, Michael and his wife Jody of Walpole, David and his wife Karen of Greenfield, and Margie Veracka and her husband Rick of Carver. He also leaves 9 grandchildren, Adam, Lee, Sheri and her husband Steve, Jennifer, Amanda, Jason, Cassandra, Julie & Kyle and great grandfather to Myles.
Alan was a Professional Engineer and also a certified Nursing Home Administrator and volunteered on numerous committees, including the School Board, Conservation Commission, and the Commission on Aging. Taylor was dedicated to the conservation of cultural and scenic landmarks as well as his family and the community. He was appointed by Governor Francis Sargent to the Massachusetts State Board of Mental Health. He was instrumental in the establishment of a playground at the Elizabeth Lyons School and founded the Conservation Commission in Randolph, MA. He was elected to numerous terms as a town meeting member and also the Randolph Board of Health. He served as a Cub Scout pack 118 leader and donated numerous hours to the children of Randolph. He was a Mason and belonged to the Nettles Island Lodge. He was a past member of the American Federation of Technical Engineers Most of all he was a dedicated father and husband. His world revolved around his family and it was his desire to see all the accomplishments of his growing family that kept him going to 93 years old. As such he will live on in the hearts and souls of everyone he touched.
Graveside services will be held at Sharon Memorial Park, 120 Canton St., Sharon, MA on Monday, October 22, 2012 at 12:45 PM. Memorial observance will be at his late residence following interment until 7PM.
