Carol was born in Brooklyn, the daughter of David Lapenn and Thelma Lapenn. The Lapenn family moved to Lynn when she was 13. She met the love of her life, Barry, at a B’nai B’rith. They were married five years later on August 20, 1967 in Brooklyn, New York, after Carol graduated Lesley College with a degree in education.
Carol and Barry lived in Bloomington, Indiana; St. Paul, Minnesota; Columbus, Ohio; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before settling in Swampscott to raise their two boys. Carol taught elementary school for many years. In Swampscott, Carol taught nursery school at Temple Beth El and served as the temple’s event coordinator. She served as president of the PTA at the Stanley School and eventually ran a successful party planning business. She shined in creative activities and planned events down to the last thoughtful detail, a Carol party was never an off-the-shelf event. For years she volunteered as a docent at the Peabody Essex Museum, where she gave the best tours, spinning out facts and stories, names and dates that could even keep a 15-year-old in rapt attention.
Carol and Barry spent five years in Portland, Oregon before retiring back to Swampscott and North Falmouth to be nearer to their two grandchildren. Carol’s love of family and friends shone through in everything she did. She attended school concerts and baseball games and never missed an opportunity to provide her famous chocolate chip banana bread. She delighted in family meals at Thanksgiving and Passover.
In her later years, Carol took to weaving and enjoyed her art classes at the Falmouth Art Center. Lunch with friends and visiting with family kept her active and busy. Her passing was a shock to her family and community. Her loss will be felt in many places across the country.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Jewish Family Services at www.jfcsboston.org/give/donate-online
