Cynthia Steinberg, proud matriarch and pillar of her family, passed away peacefully at the age of 87, surrounded by the love of her cherished children and grandchildren on February 9, 2024. Cynthia was a powerful force in the lives of all who knew her, leaving behind a legacy of enduring love and devotion.
Born in Lynn, Massachusetts and raised in Newton (happily remaining in Newton for most of her life), Cynthia's journey was one of love and commitment, focused throughout her life around her family. Her seemingly unlimited dedication to her husband of 63 years, two children and four grandchildren was unparalleled, imbuing them all with a love of family and a desire to succeed and help others. She was a loving mother and grandmother, making her family the number one priority above her own needs and ready to cheer on her children and grandchildren in whatever academic, sporting or artistic endeavors they pursued.
In her own inimitable way, Cynthia led by example and demonstrated a model that her entire family could be proud to follow. She exemplified treating people with fairness and naturally looked beyond societal bias. She believed in equality and learned not to focus on the differences in people. While she sometimes struggled in dealing with her own reactions when her expectations of others and family members went unmet, it was clear to all that her love for her family was fierce and unconditional.
Cynthia had natural charisma and a keen intellect and was often the life of the party. She was always well informed (an avid viewer of CNN) and game to discuss any gamut of topics. She truly enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life and often shared with new acquaintances how impressed she was by them. She could light up any room she entered, and could captivate friends and new acquaintances with her quick wit and savvy views on life and politics. A true Bostonian at heart, Cynthia was an avid fan of the New England Patriots in their heyday and often the most excitable observer within the spectating crowd.
Cynthia was also known for her impeccable sense of fashion, effortlessly exuding style and great looks wherever she went and making sure her husband, Richard, was always appropriately attired. Her formidable wardrobe was a reflection of her vibrant personality and desire to engage with people. She especially loved to take family members clothes shopping to her favorite stores in Newton and Mashpee, Cape Cod, where for many years she and Richard had a summer home.
Cynthia’s career choice was to be a stay-at-home mom, support her husband and children in their work and lives, and maintain a beautiful, spotless and welcoming home. She had exacting standards and always met them. With her energy and talent, she clearly could have had her own successful career outside of her homemaker role, but she was proud to see her family members flourish while she played such an important role in enabling and celebrating their success.
Cynthia's legacy of love, humor, and fairness will forever live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. Though she may no longer walk among us, her spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us, reminding us to live each day with love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to family.
Cynthia is survived by her loving children, Susan Steinberg-Oren and her husband, Kaya Oren, of Los Angeles, California, son Robert Steinberg and his wife Beatrice Steinberg of Cambridge, Massachusetts, adoring grandchildren, Gabrielle Steinberg of Oakland, California, Geffen Oren of Los Angeles, California, Simone Steinberg of El Cerrito, California and Lena Oren of Los Angeles, California, and a multitude of relatives and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, February 12, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington Street, Canton, MA, followed by burial at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon, MA.
Shiva will be held at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Rob and Bea Steinberg on Monday, February 12th, starting at 6:00 PM with a brief service at 7:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Cynthia’s honor to Hospice Foundation of America at https://givedirect.org/hfa/ and Anti-Defamation League at https://support.adl.org
Rest in peace, dear Cynthia. You will be deeply missed, but your legacy of love and support will shine on forever in our hearts.
