Dr. David L. Sudhalter, World War II Navy veteran and retired Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Bridgewater State University, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2026, at the age of 99, surrounded by his loving family at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in West Roxbury, Massachusetts.
Born in Boston in 1927, David joined the Navy in 1944 after graduating from Roxbury Memorial High School. Serving on the USS Ajax as a medic, he participated in the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946. Following his military discharge, Dr. Sudhalter earned a degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which led to a scholarship at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. Later, he completed both his master’s degree and Ph.D. at Boston University.
His career in higher education began at Calvin Coolidge College on Beacon Hill, where he served as dean. He subsequently taught at Boston State College and Massasoit Community College before joining Bridgewater State University—his favorite institution—from which he retired in 1998. Among his proudest academic achievements was an invitation to join the Council on Foreign Relations.
A loving husband for 74 years, David shared a deep, enduring devotion with his wife, Annette. Predeceased by his children, Esther Sudhalter Gerlach and Robert Sudhalter, he is survived by his loving family: his wife, Annette; his daughter-in-law, Anna Sudhalter, and her husband, Joe Versackas; his devoted nephew, Dr. Mark Rubin, and his wife, Aura; his devoted niece Deana Rose Halperin; his grandchildren, Richard Gerlach, Sam Sudhalter, and David Sudhalter; and two great-grandchildren. His life experiences taught him to be compassionate with troubled souls and to respect the goodness in all men and women.
The family thanks the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff affiliated with the VA for all their care and love. The family also wants to share their thanks to the dedicated caregivers who helped every day and night.
