Herbert was born on June 2, 1940 in Providence, RI to the late Irving and Dorothy (Richman) Solup. He grew up in Fall River, MA and was often found at the family business, Irving’s Shoe, with his sister Brenda and brother Eddie. In 1958, Herb graduated from Durfee High School. After high school, he played gigs as a drummer in a jazz band. He then went on to attend Bryant College in Smithfield, RI, before joining the Army National Guard, where he saw active duty during the Berlin Crisis.
Herbert and his wife owned and operated Solup Shoecase in Malden, MA for nearly 40 years. Herbert was a Mason, and also a member of the Sharon Men’s Club, Temple B’nai Tikvah, Moses Mendelsohn, and Knights of Pythias. In his spare time, Herb loved going camping on the Cape, mowing his lawn and going to Old Silver Beach with his wife Faye and friends. He took pride in keeping a clean car, and was an avid fan of the antique car show. Some of the other activities that Herb liked to do were playing Scrabble, going out to dinner with friends, and spending time with his grandchildren. Herb also enjoyed spending quality time with his sister and her family down in Newport, RI. One of his other passions was food. He delighted in eating his daughter Luciana’s chicken parm, his wife Faye’s matzoh ball soup, and his sister-in-law Glenda’s catering specialities.
Herbert was a devoted father of Jeffrey Solup and his wife Ellen, Bethann Rawl and her husband Scott, and Luciana Mazzella and her husband Mario. He was a loving brother of Brenda Margolis and her late husband Maurice, the late Edwin Solup and his surviving wife Beverly, and brother-in-law of Glenda Blake and her late husband Bob. He was a cherished grandfather of Ashley, Emily, Ethan, Brianna, Angelina, Marisa, and Mario.
Funeral services will be held at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington Street, Canton, MA on Sunday, January 6th at 12 Noon, followed by burial at Moses Mendelsohn Cemetery, 490 North Street, Randolph, MA.
Memorial observance will be at his late residence following the burial until 8PM and continuing on Monday 2-4PM and 6-8 PM and Tuesday 6-8PM. Minyan each night at 7PM.
