Joan was born in 1935 and grew up in New York and New Jersey. She spent much of her adult life in Sharon, MA raising her three children with her husband Larry. They especially enjoyed vacationing in Maine together as well as making frequent visits to see their three granddaughters.
When Larry passed away, she moved to the Orchard Cove retirement community where she enjoyed her last years. She died peacefully and quietly in her Orchard Cove apartment, fulfilling her wish since moving in.
Joan was a lifelong learner; she earned a nursing degree, a bachelor's degree, and two master's degrees in the mental health field. Her work in mental health included counseling inmates at a state prison. She took great satisfaction from her work which was focused on helping people improve the quality of their lives. She was very active at Orchard Cove where her activities included chairing the film committee and participating in numerous creative writing programs. She self-published a collection of poetry and prose entitled "Cherish The Moments." She also sponsored the “Joan Kaplowitz Fund for the Written Word” which included the event “Six Word Memoirs: An Evening of Storytelling”.
Joan will be remembered for her sharp mind, sunny disposition, caring attitude, and as someone who was always available to listen. There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, August 26 at Orchard Cove.
