Martin "Marty" William Stern

Martin (Marty) William Stern of Sharon, previously of Mansfield, MA and Bristol, CT, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2026, at 80 years of age.

Son of the late Florence (Hartman) and Jacob Stern. Devoted husband of Ellen Stern of 56 years. Beloved father of Michael Stern and his wife Angelique of Foxborough, MA; Daniel Stern and his wife Shelby of Wesley Chapel, FL; and Courtney Epstein and her husband Evan of Providence, RI. Cherished grandfather of Ava and Alexander Stern, Alexis and Zachary Epstein, and Jaxon Stern. Brother of Jess Stern and the late Gary Stern.

Marty was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 8, 1946. At 6 feet, 8 1/2 inches tall (yes- he played basketball in high school!), he was a gentle giant - very quiet and soft spoken. However, when you got him talking, he was incredibly intelligent, had a sneaky funny sense of humor, and had a talent for funny poetry, writing a multi-page anniversary poem every year for his beloved Ellen that recapped the previous year’s events.

Marty graduated with a history degree from Brooklyn College in 1968. He was very proud of his career and work at The Travelers Insurance Company, but he really loved to talk about how his favorite job was in his younger years, selling beer at Shea Stadium, Yankee Stadium, and Madison Square Garden. Marty truly adored his family - he spoke with love and immense pride about his children and grandchildren, and he loved attending their games, concerts, and other events.

The most endearing thing about Marty was that he was unapologetically, true to himself, and he was proudly allegiant to his favorite things…

His beloved sports teams, included the Philadelphia Phillies, NY Jets, UConn Huskies basketball, and Kentucky Wildcat basketball. Prior to them moving and breaking his heart, he was also a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Hartford Whalers. His all-time favorite player was Duke Snyder. He loved watching his teams on TV and listening to the games on the radio.

He also loved old shows and even older music, including 50s on 5, Seriously Sinatra, and Buddy Holly. Marty loved going to the theater and ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ was his all-time favorite show. Over the years, he and Ellen had season tickets at multiple theaters and traveled to numerous states to enjoy theater productions. He also loved to travel and enjoyed talking about the trips that they had been on… always highlighting the food that they ate!

Marty loved going out to eat and had very specific food likes. His favorite was a good Chinese buffet (especially shrimp & lobster sauce and boneless spareribs!), but he was also quite fond of BBQ ribs, Jewish deli, Dr. Brown’s cream soda, and egg creams. Perhaps his favorite food, ketchup, was utilized at nearly every meal!!

Most impressively, Marty was amazing at trivia. He was a wealth of random knowledge, and he won several trivia contests. As a young adult, he even won a car from a radio station music trivia contest. And, in his final days, he continued to rattle off trivia facts to all of the amazing people that came in to help or visit him. He was smart, loving, and always uniquely “Marty” and his memory will forever be a blessing.
