Melvin Merrill Perlmutter of Canton, formerly of Newton and Stoughton, passed peacefully and surrounded by his beloved family on January 15, 2019 at the age of 97. Adored husband of Bess (Resnick) Perlmutter for 71 beautiful years filled with love and laughter. Devoted father of Marsha and Carl Shapiro and Janet and John Schwartz. Papa to his five adoring “dividends,” Laura and Adam Zaks, Jordanna and Brendan Deegan, Daniel Shapiro, Amy Schwartz, and predeceased by Todd Schwartz. Great-grandfather to the luckiest five children, Teddy, Erin, Ellie, Leo, and Matty.
Melvie was born in Boston on February 19, 1921 as the tenth and youngest child of Jeanette (Friedman) and Harry Perlmutter. He brought happiness to everyone he met from that day forward. After serving in the US Army’s Signal Corps, he came home and met his beautiful bride on a blind date. The rest, as they say, is history. And what a history it was. He taught us to live life to its fullest, to eat ice cream before dinner, and to find an adventure in each and every day.
Services will be at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington Street, Canton, MA on Thursday, January 17th at 1PM, followed by burial at Mishkan Tefila Memorial Park, 2633 Centre Street, West Roxbury.
Family and friends are welcome to join Melvin’s family for shiva hours, which will be held at his late residence, Brightview, 125 Turnpike Street, Canton on Thursday following burial until 8PM, Friday from 1-4PM, and Saturday from 7-9PM.
To honor Melvin, please consider eating ice cream before dinner, cheering on the Celtics, telling someone how much you love them (as he often told his adoring family), or by making a donation to organizations he deeply cared about: The Laboratory of Loren Walensky (Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave, Longwood Center 3216, Boston, MA 02215) and Jewish War Veterans (jwv.org).
