Morey H. Waltuck

Morey H. Waltuck, 89, of Foxboro, Massachusetts, formerly of Sharon, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. Born in Rochester, New York on January 29, 1937, Morey was the son of the late Zella (Berger) and Harry Waltuck and the loving husband of Mary F. (Duyette) Waltuck for 30 years. Beloved father of Benjamin Waltuck and wife Melissa, and Daniel Waltuck and wife Adrian; his stepson Brian Weed and wife Carolyn; and son-in-law John Schiff. He was predeceased by his daughter, Sandra Schiff, his sister, Linda Michael, his brother, Bernard Waltuck, and his former wife Susan (Fuhrman) Waltuck.

Morey was cherished by 10 grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He was the patriarch of a large and extended family of loving cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Morey’s life was marked by curiosity, ingenuity, hard work, and a wonderful sense of humor. Morey graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Rochester. He formed lifelong friendships at Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. In 1961 he was drafted into the United States Army where he helped build the first megawatt laser.

Following his Army service, Morey returned to Rochester to continue graduate study in optics. His work took him to Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and ultimately Massachusetts, where his career in optics continued for many years, culminating as Vice President of Research and Development at Mentor Ophthalmology. Retirement did little to diminish Morey’s curiosity - he worked with researchers at the Schepens Eye Research Institute, and he helped develop a portable device to aid in detecting concussions. He took great pride in a profession that allowed him to combine his talent for physics and engineering with his fascination with light, lenses, and problem-solving.

Outside of professional accomplishments, Morey was a cherished member of Temple Israel in Sharon, MA. He served as president of the temple Brotherhood from 1984-1986, was named Man of the Year in 1990, Keeper of the Flame in 2004, and honored as President Emeritus of the Brotherhood in 2023.

Morey was a lifelong sailor, serving as Commodore of the Massapoag Yacht Club in Sharon, where he raced sailboats with his sons Dan and Ben, and wife Mary. He taught boating safety for the US Power Squadron where he learned and then taught a course in celestial navigation.

Morey treasured his family above all else. He will also be remembered with affection by his extended family, lifelong friends, and former colleagues.

Morey had a remarkable memory for the details of a life well lived. He approached the world as both an engineer and a storyteller, wanting to understand how things worked and remembering how they happened, and usually finding something funny in the process. His was a life of intelligence and invention, but also of perseverance, humility, friendship, family, and enduring passion for learning. There was always another problem worth thinking about, another story worth telling, and another reason to laugh.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Temple Israel, 125 Pond Street, Sharon, Massachusetts. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon.

Shiva will be held at the family home in Foxboro following the burial until 5PM and 6:30-8:30PM with Minyan at 7:30, and on Wednesday and Thursday from 3-5PM and 6:30-8:30PM with Minyan at 7:30.
