Born on July 13, 1934 to Faye and Barney Aizar. Sister, Joan, born July 13, 1930…to a family of modest means but rich in love and affection. Riv was considered bright as a child and graduated from high school among the top in her class. Her family expected that she would work after high school, so college was never a consideration. She graduated from high school with honors at the age of sixteen and went to work as a secretary at Consolidated Clothiers in Manhattan in the famous Flatiron building. There, she met a young Assistant Men’s Clothing Buyer named Herb and the two quickly became good friends. This was at the time of the Korean War and, after a few months, Herb was inducted into the service. Once they were no longer co-workers, Herb felt free to write to Riv expressing his love and she quickly responded in kind. Thus began a voluminous correspondence that lasted until his discharge from the Navy in 1953. They were married on December 5th of that year.
After Marc was born in 1956, Riv happily became a stay at home Mom. Herb had, by this time, begun to climb the ladder in the growing new discount retail business. Over the next few years, the young family moved from New York, to New Jersey to Chicago to Amarillo, Texas to New Orleans to Fargo, North Dakota and finally to Atlanta, where, in 1963, Cathy was born. During these years and many moves, Riv was, first and foremost, a Mom and housekeeper but also took the time to volunteer for various charitable organizations and for whichever synagogue they happened to belong to at the time. In 1973 the family moved to Birmingham, Alabama and finally settled down to stay.
She loved her children and their spouses and adored spending time with her grandchildren. She would say that loving her grandchildren was her number one hobby.
Riv greatly esteemed and admired the characteristic of sincerity in her friends and family and always strove to be a person of integrity and genuineness herself. She liked and needed to be busy and productive…she cooked, organized, had systems for many things she did, loved her plants and flowers, was the family spelling and grammar expert, crossword puzzle devotee and always had a project going, even when relaxing, such as sewing, needlepoint, or knitting for family and for Circle of Life Knitting Group.
