Robert Bloom, of Braintree, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at 90 years of age. Son of the late Sadie (Applebaum) and Jack Bloom. Loving husband of Elizabeth “Liz” (Welsh) Bloom of 56 years. Beloved father of Stacey Bloom and her husband Steven Ostrovitz of Braintree; and Susanne Bloom and her late husband Neil Kosak of Duxbury. Cherished grandfather of Jack Bloom and Sophie Ostrovitz. Brother of Anita Raymond of Ashdod, Israel and the late Irving Bloom of Fairlawn, NJ.
Bob was born in Paterson, NJ on July 24, 1934. He was a graduate of Rutgers University and Portia Law School (now New England Law). Bob served in the National Guard, assigned. to his amusement, to operate a bulldozer. After working in private practice for several years, he became an Assistant Clerk Magistrate at Quincy District Court, where he presided over the 4th Session for 45 years, finally retiring seven years ago at the age of 83. Everyone who encountered Bob, regardless of their status, was treated with respect and kindness. There was no one Bob would not help. No matter where Bob went, he ran into those who he had helped at the Court House. “I know you, you helped me at the Court House” was a common phrase whenever Bob and his family were out. Bob was known for his sense of humor both in Court and at home, and everyone his family encountered seemed to have a “Bob Bloom story.”
Bob was a true Renaissance man. He was a voracious reader, played the piano, could fix almost any problem that came his way, loved theater and music, and knew poetry and world history. To his daughters, there was nothing he did not know. Growing up in a Yiddish-speaking home, Bob never lost his love for all things Yiddish. Anyone driving with Bob was treated to his extensive collection of Yiddish CDs, Aaron Lebedeff singing Romania, DuDu Fisher, Fyvish Finkel and the Barry sisters. Bob passed his love of Yiddish along to his daughters and nothing made him smile more than his grandson counting in Yiddish.
The great love of Bob’s life was his family. Bob doted on his daughters, Stacey and Susanne; he loved nothing more than spending time with them and believed in them like no one else. His love of being a father was second only to his love of being a Zaide to his grandson Jack. Named for his father, Jack brought joy and light into Bob’s life.
