Ruth Cain Wechsler entered into rest on July 29, 2025, at the age of 106. The daughter of Albert P. Cain and May Gainer Cain, Ruth was born in Chicago on New Year’s Day, 1919, and named after her aunt, a 19 year old victim of the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic. Ruth was a gifted artist who studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and briefly worked as an illustrator for the mapmaker Rand McNally. Throughout her life she liked to sketch portraits using charcoal and other media.
Ruth was also a prolific bridge player, who, with her husband Leonard as partner, traveled to various sanctioned tournaments and played well enough to be recognized as a Master by the American Contract Bridge League. Mostly though, Ruth will be remembered as a gentle and selfless but fierce advocate for her family. She was married for 53 years and raised three sons, who could always rely on her unshakeable support. She also maintained a close relationship with her brother William and his family.
In 2010, as a 91 year old widow, Ruth moved from Chicago to Hingham, MA, to be closer to her grandchildren. Modest and self-effacing, her grace and humor endeared her to all who knew her, and she made friendships easily wherever she lived.
Ruth is survived by sons James and Thomas, grandchildren Mark, Carrie, Jack and Christina, and six great-grandchildren Mia, David, Josie, Eli, Lyla and Hayden. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Leonard, son Michael and grandson David.
