Hiltz, Shelah H. (Harrison), of Wrentham, MA passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 23, 2018 at the age of 80. Born in New Haven, CT on May 15, 1937 to Isadore and Charlotte Harrison, Shelah grew up in Chelsea and Everett, until marrying the love of her life in 1957, her rock and best friend, James Hiltz.
Amazing mother to Darryl L. Hiltz and his wife Sharon, Ross C. Hiltz, Heidi B. Henry, and mother-in-law to Joanne Hiltz. She was the loving sister to Beverly Spector and Doreen Harrison. She was the special and fun grandmother to Cooper, Tyler, Justin and Lindsey. She also leaves behind many special nieces, nephews and extended family.
Her heart was in the arts, as she was filled with an insatiable talent for drawing, painting, sculpting and sewing. Armed with these talents, a business degree from The Burdett School of Business and a Preschool Teacher Certification from Wheaton College, she succeeded to voluntarily organize and run the free Sharon Community Preschool Program in the mid 1960’s. This experience, and her incredible creativity, launched her career as a lead preschool teacher for over 40 years, touching the lives of over 2000 little people. The majority of her career was at The Sharon Country Day School and ended at The Temple Nursery School in Norwood.
A longtime resident of Sharon, until her move to Wrentham in 2006, Shelah was highly active in the Sharon Community. She was active with the recreation department and all of their youth and teen activities, she designed and created the costumes for the annual play performed by the Sharon Seniors On the Go, and, as a member of the 4th of July Committee, she designed, engineered and organized the building of many floats and costumes for the annual 4th of July parade. She was a Boy Scout Leader, a Campfire Girls Leader, and willing member to any committee that needed her assistance or creative flare.
She worked hard and she played hard. Shelah was funny, smart, creative, loyal, passionate and generous.
Beyond her family, she leaves behind many special friends that she has grown with over the years – many that she grew up with and many that she met along the way through all of her activities. She will be greatly missed and widely remembered.
Memorial observance will be held at the Hiltz residence on Saturday from 7pm to 9pm and Sunday from 2pm to 8pm.
Expressions of sympathy in her memory may be donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or The Arc of South Norfolk, 789 Clapboardtree Street, Westwood, MA 02090.
