Stephen Cooper

Stephen Z. Cooper of Dedham passed away suddenly on August 7, 2026 at 82 years of age.

Son of Faye and Abraham Cooper. Beloved Husband to Maureen (Flynn) Cooper of 49 years. Devoted Father of Emily (Cooper) and John Haven of Dedham, Johanna (Cooper) and Sean Hoxie of Norwood, and Stephanie Cooper-Smith and Eric Smith of Wellfleet and South Boston, MA. Cherished Grandfather of 5 grandchildren: Jack and Kate Haven; Cooper, Henry and Abigail Hoxie; and Fritz and Nellie Smith. Supportive Brother of Ina R. Cooper of Haywood, CA. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Stephen Cooper was born on May 24, 1944 in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Mathematics and also held a Master’s degree in the History of Science from Princeton University. He served in the Peace Corps in Guinea, West Africa teaching French and Math. He then worked as an Archivist at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., at the New York State Archives, and at the Massachusetts State Archives, followed by a career as a Software Engineer. His greatest joy was loving and caring for his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed gardening, reading, making violins, bike riding, pickleball, and shooting. The memory of Stephen’s kindness, humility, and love as a husband, father, and grandfather will never fade. He will be forever in our hearts.

A Jewish service will be held at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington Street, Canton on Friday, August 21st at 11 AM followed by a burial at Highland Cemetery in Norwood.
