Rev. Charles William Ulmer went to be with our Lord on Feb. 27, 2015 at the Aultman Compassionate Care Center. He was the son of Charles and Margaret (Dangle) Ulmer, and was raised on the family farm in Rose Valley, Pa. with his five brothers and five sisters. He attended Sharon Center High School near Medina, Ohio his first year, but returned home where he graduated from the Williamsport High School in the class of 1944. He graduated from Cleveland Bible College (Malone University) in 1948. He pastored two Evangelical United Brethren Churches in McZena, Ohio. While there, he went to Ashland College and graduated with a B.A. degree, followed by one year at Ashland Seminary. He then moved to Naperville, Ill. for two years, where he completed his seminary at Evangelical Theological Seminary and received his B.D. degree. While there, he served the Pontiac Evangelical United Brethren Church. He returned to Ohio, where he received an appointment from the East Ohio Annual Conference as Pastor of the McDonaldsville St. Paul Evangelical United Brethren Church (now United Methodist) in 1955. He served McDonaldsville for 32 years, retiring in 1987, and was given the title of Pastor Emeritus by the congregation. While there and as the church family grew, he was involved in three building programs: the parsonage, the educational unit, and the addition to the sanctuary and social room. Following retirement he became Pastor of Visitation for 14 years at Westbrook Park United Methodist Church in Canton, OH, retiring in 2001. In the United Methodist Church Conference, he served on the Board of Ordained Ministry and on the Council of Ministries in the Canton District, and served as Youth Director for the Canton District several years.
He was a compassionate, humble Pastor, living an exemplary life doing God’s work, putting other people’s needs before his. He was always “On Call”, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even postponing vacations because someone needed him, whether it be church family or someone outside the church. We will miss his beautiful, meaningful prayers, both at church services or functions, and our family gatherings, and the annual reading of the Christmas story with the family on Christmas Day. Their large garden was his & Lois' hobby.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of almost 70 years, Lois I. (Paulhamus) Ulmer, three daughters, Marvalene (Dennis) Matson, Marcia Ulmer, and Diane (Kim) Morrison, and one son, Charles W. (Sheryl) Ulmer, II, PhD. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Denise (Dylan) Palmer, Eric (Jennifer) Matson, Melissa (Christopher) Coultas, and Amanda (Derek Ehrman) Matson, PhD, five Great-grandsons, and one Great-granddaughter, two sisters, two sisters-in-law, and one brother-in-law. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, and five brothers, three brothers-in-law, and three sisters-in-laws.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 8, at 2 PM at Westbrook Park United Methodist Church with Dr. Joel Adkins officiating. Friends may call at Karlo-Libby Funeral Home on Saturday, March 7, from 4 – 8 PM and one hour prior to the service at the church.
