

He was born in Canton on December 26, 1929 to the late Donald C. and Mildred C. (Bracken) Vandegrift. He was a Boy Scout leader of Troop 30 in Canton and pioneer of Air Scout Squadron of Canton. A US Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict, he retired from J&L Steel and was a member of American Legion Post 548 of Louisville and VFW Post 3747 of Canton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two wives, Mary Stewart and Alice Vandegrift; and one son, Donald J. Vandegrift II. He is survived by his daughter, Laura Hunt of North Carolina; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin & Tabitha Vandegrift of Carrollton; stepson Kenneth McGee of Denver; brother and sister-in-law, David and Cheryl Vandegrift of Canton; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Thursday in the Karlo-Libby Funeral Home. Interment will be in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens with military honors provided by American Legion Post #44. Friends may call one hour before services (10-11am) at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America.
