Doug was born on January 7, 1946 in Canton to the late Howard and Hilda (Keisinger) Koontz. Doug was a graduate of Timken High School. In 1965, Doug enlisted in the United States Air Force and honorably served his country until 1971. Doug attended Trinity Baptist Church in North Canton. Doug was employed at Timken for over 9 years. After working for Timken, he started volunteering for organizations such as Red Cross, Wilderness Center, the VA, the Salvation Army, Stark Parks (as a trail blazer), and for Total Living Center where he served as a cook. When he was younger, Doug played basketball and ran track. As he got older, he enjoyed going on walks. He was a giver and loved his volunteer work and helping people.
Doug is survived by his best friend and partner of many years, Linda Gillman, and her son, Kevin Gillman, two sisters, Barbara Bartchy and Alice Lynn, and many nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his two brothers, Howard and Thomas Koontz.
