

Henry Charles Kappel, age 95, peacefully passed away in his sleep at home on December 20, 2018, into the loving arms of Jesus. Born December 6, 1923, in Chicago, Illinois, Henry was the son of Edwin L. and Mary Carroll (Leonard) Kappel. Henry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia, September 15, 2015, whom he happily married on September 9, 1950. They celebrated 65 years of marriage. He is grateful to God for his dear children, Hank and Lainie (Matthews), Mary Pat (Kappel) and Bill Gokee, Ann (Kappel) and Randy Hoffee, and Mike and Chris (Frank). Affectionately known as "Pops", he was grandfather and great grandfather to 17 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Henry provided a family legacy of love, honor, trust, and respect for all people.
Raised in Oak Park, Illinois, Henry and family moved from Elmhurst, Illinois, to Canton, Ohio on December 28, 1964. Henry was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church. A World War II Veteran, he enlisted in the US Army Air Force (USAAF) in 1942 and served as an aerial gunner on B24 and B29 bombers in the 715th Squadron, 448th Bomber Group. He graduated from Oak Park High School in 1941 and Monmouth College, Illinois in 1948 with a BS Engineering Physics Degree. He attended Northwestern University and De Paul University Graduate School of Business in Chicago and became a Licensed and Registered Professional Engineer in Illinois and Ohio. As an entrepreneur, Henry enjoyed a long career in business. He founded UniValve Corporation in Chicago, Illinois obtaining numerous mechanical patents for his inventions, and writing many technical articles. He was Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Merit Plastics, Inc. in East Canton, Ohio, retiring in 1977. As an avid story teller, Henry went on to author four adventure novels, two of which were published. He was a member of the Canton Chamber of Commerce, Greater Canton Writers Guild, and Ohio Tree Farmers of Guernsey County, Ohio. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion, Knights of Columbus, and Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. Henry and Patricia owned Sugar Tree Farm in Guernsey County, OH, as well a place in Naples, Florida. enjoying many family memories. Loving to travel abroad, Henry and Patricia enjoyed visiting multiple countries over the years.
Henry had a tenacious spirit. His strength and love will be sorely missed by his entire family and all who knew him. Pops was one of a kind!
Calling hours will be Thursday, December 27, 2018, at Karlo-Libby Funeral Home on Everhard Road in Canton, from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. The funeral will be held at 11:00 am at St. Michael Catholic Church in Canton, on Friday, December 28. There will be a calling hour from 10:00 - 11:00 am at St. Michael's preceding the funeral Mass. Burial will be at Sunset Hills Memory Garden immediately following the funeral. A luncheon will be held for family and friends at St. Michael's after the burial.
