James F. Myers (1/4/1929 - 8/20/2017)
With great sadness, their son and daughter announce the deaths of James F. (88) and Avis R. (87) Myers of North Canton. Following numerous health issues, Jim passed away on 8/20 and Avie, very unexpectedly, the day before. They were able to hold hands and renew their wedding vows together during what would be their last hours on this earth, celebrating their final wedding anniversary of 66 years of life together. Now they are together for all eternity in heaven.
Born in Warren, Ohio, Jim served as a military policeman with the occupation forces in Japan following the end of WWII. After military service, he graduated from Hiram College with a degree in Political Science. After a long career with BF Goodrich in Akron, Jim retired as a Director of National Sales. Born in Canton, OH, Avie attended the College of Wooster and later transferred to Hiram College graduating with a BA in English. She taught English & Study Skills at Stark State College.
Jim and Avie met at Hiram College, beginning their relationship singing opera together. Throughout their 66 years of marriage, they shared an infectious appreciation of the arts, literature, global travel, history and music. They rode elephants in Thailand, walked the beaches of Normandy, enjoyed the beauty of Monet’s Giverny, & joined the singing of Evensong at King’s College Chapel in the UK. Regardless of location, they sought adventure & embraced life to its fullest. It was shared passions & respect which deepened their friendship & love with every passing year.
Another great joy to them was the life and community of Christ Presbyterian Church of Canton. They were stalwarts in the choir for many years. They thrived in their Agape small group community, a particularly important support to them in recent years.
Giving back & involvement in the local community was a priority. This included participation in or leadership roles with Friends of the Library, the College Club, the Retired Executive Group, and numerous book groups.
They are survived by two children who adored their parents, Doug Myers (Sue) of Billings, MT; Julia Hoff of Boston, MA. They were greatly loved by three grandchildren, Christopher Hoff (Caitlin) of Boston, MA; Jenny Homes (Rob) of Durango, Colorado; Jim Myers (Leah) of Fort Collins, Colorado & four great grandchildren with another due in December.
A memorial service, a Witness of the Resurrection, will be held at Christ Presbyterian Church in Canton, Ohio at 11:00 am on the 30th of September. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Music Ministry of Christ Presbyterian Church or to Aultman Compassionate Care Center, c/o The Aultman Foundation, Attn: Charitable Gifts, 2600 Sixth St. SW, Canton, Ohio 44710-1799.
