She is preceded in death by her husband Gerald W. Slusser, her parents, her sister Dorothy Jean Hodge Sanford, and her step father Alva Sinclair.
June graduated from Timken High School in 1945, and went to work as a bank teller. She met her husband “Jerry” at a YMCA dance after WWII. They married September 19, 1948 at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Canton, and were happily wed for 72 years. The newlyweds moved to Columbus and June continued working to support them while Jerry attended Ohio State.
Upon his graduation, June retired to start and raise a family.
She was a wonderful mother making sure that her three daughters and son experienced things not readily available during her youth. She was a Brownie leader, provided dance and piano lessons for the girls and horn for son Jim. She made sure all learned how to swim (YMCA), and taught her daughters to sew. June and Jerry insured the family regularly attend church together, and learn proper manners and appearance, perform chores, and keep a schedule. She encouraged all to get jobs in high school to pay for extras. The bank teller in her taught her children to balance a checkbook and make regular contributions to a savings account. She returned to work at Surety S&L in Dover, Ohio to help with college expenses and saw all four graduate. During her 20 year tenure she was secretary to the bank president, and especially proud of her achievement of passing a state test to sell annuities.
June and Jerry spent their early retirement years living with her son, Jim in Florida, who kept them busy cruising, cooking, and enjoying life, and in final years with daughter Rebecca in Louisiana, where a steady stream of visits from children and grandchildren kept life happy and full.
June is survived by daughters Rebecca Jo (Walter) Alves, Metairie, La; Amy Michaele (David) Zehnder, Clarington, Oh; Susan Ann (Gary “Tex”) Stern, Cameron WV; son James Calvin (Hector Pineda) Slusser, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two sisters in law: Barbara Kreuz, Canton, Oh; and Donna Oswald, Massillon, Oh; six grandchildren: Melissa Marie LeBoeuf (Kim Kornfeld), New Orleans, La; Stephanie Ann Alves (Wade Kimbro), New Orleans, La; Matthew David Zehnder, Berkley, Ca; Aaron Michael Zehnder, Oh; Katherine Rose Zehnder, Oh; Spencer Wilson Stern WV, and two great grandchildren: Eleanor Carolyn Kornfield and Kim John Kornfeld III, La. She will be missed by all.
A private funeral is planned for her family with interment at Sunset Hills Burial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Karlo-Libby Funeral Home.
