Marcia Louise Gunsoy

Marcia was born on July 9, 1937 in Canton, Ohio to the late Atlee and Pauline Piero. A 1955 graduate of the former Lehman High School, Marcia graduated from the Aultman School of Nursing. While working at Aultman Hospital as a pediatric nurse, she met her future husband, Dr. Ertugrul Gunsoy of Istanbul, Turkiye. Married in 1959, they spent the next 54 years raising their family in Turkiye. Once their daughters came to live in the U.S., Marcia and Ertugrul spent several months annually visiting them and grandchildren in Canton, Ohio. Marcia relocated permanently to Canton, Ohio following the passing of her husband in 2013 but continued to spend the summers in Turkiye until 2020.

Her life in Turkiye was a great adventure. She fully embraced the language and culture and made many great friends that kept in touch with her until the end. She loved life, gardening, swimming, traveling, art, music, ballet, and animals, especially dogs and elephants. Marcia was an avid sports fan (soccer, college & pro football, baseball, basketball), arising in the middle of the night in Turkiye to watch the Cleveland Cavaliers win the 2016 NBA championship.

In addition to her parents, Marcia was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Ertugrul Gunsoy of Turkiye, her brother Dr. David Piero of Columbus, Ohio, and her sister Judith Keevil of North Canton, Ohio. Marcia is survived by daughters Pinar (Geoff) Elliott, and Deniz (Greg) Liebau, grandsons Dr. Brandon (Mary) Liebau, Corey Liebau, and great-grandson Titus Liebau, with a great-granddaughter due to arrive later this year. Marcia is survived by sister-in-law Janet Piero of Dublin, Ohio, brother-in-law James Keevil of North Canton, Ohio. Marcia is also survived by many nieces / nephews and grandnieces / grandnephews in Turkiye (Zeynep Atesoglu (Leyla, Yasemin), Cemil Gunsoy (Nukhet, Yigit, Demet), Nil Sertceoglu (Servet, Candan, Uluc)) and in the US (Angie Boettler (Scott, Michael, Mathew), Jeff Piero (Alissa, Alex, Jack), Suzanne Kotch (Tom), and Jackie Piero).

A memorial service will be held on July 26, 2025 at St. Jacob Lutheran Church (8697 Mudbrook St. NW, Massillon, Ohio) with visitation to begin at 10:00 am followed by a celebration of life service at 11:00 am and a luncheon afterward. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marcia’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee or to Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

She will be greatly missed by one and all as a mother, grandmother and a great friend…
