Marvin A. Wengerd, 86, of Chesterland, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 8th, 2025. Born on May 9th, 1939 in Millersburg, Ohio to the late Andrew C. and Verna (Schlabach) Wengerd, he was a devoted husband to the late Judy Siegrist Swope, loving father to sons Scott and Andy, father-in-law to Robin and RuthAnn and affectionately known as “papa” to grandchildren Avery and Riley.
Marv was a dedicated family man and loyal employee of University Hospitals of Cleveland for many years. He began his career there in 1960 where he met his future wife Judy and they eventually married June 27th, 1964. He would go on to serve the hospital and patients in need of respiratory care for a record 55 years until his retirement in 2015. An avid sports fan, he was honored for his UH service by throwing out the first pitch at a Guardians game that same year.
A 1980 graduate of Cleveland State University, Marv was a long-time member of Epworth-Euclid United Methodist Church where he and Judy established many lifelong friendships including their monthly Bridge and Dinner social group. He was an avid reader, fan of classical music and deeply interested in his family genealogy. Marv was also a natural tinkerer and could build or fix nearly anything and truly enjoyed working with his hands. He spent much of his free time at the family’s beloved Lake Erie retreat on Middle Bass Island for nearly 65 years, where fishing, boating and simply spending quality time with each other was always the agenda.
Finally, Marv was always there for his family, no matter what … a consistent, constant presence with a friendly, even-keeled attitude, smart advice and a “go with the flow” outlook that made him our dad, pop and papa. He will be dearly missed.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Judy (2002); brother, Aden Wengerd (2022); and sisters, Mary Kandel (2023), and Mattie Miller (2019); and is survived by sons, Whitney Scott (Robin) of Chagrin Falls, Andrew Jonathan (RuthAnn) of Western Springs, IL; twin granddaughters, Avery Grace and Riley AnnaBelle; as well as many relatives in Holmes County, OH and Springboro, PA.
Final resting place will be North Canton Cemetery and a family service will be held to honor Marvin’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Boys Town at boystown.org.
