He was born March 31, 1934 in North Canton, to the late Charles Edward and Edith (Wise) Shafer. Rick served his country for 28 years in the U.S. Air Force, including a tour in Vietnam. After he retired, he enjoyed flea-marketing, garage sales, and was an avid reader. Before he returned to Ohio, he enjoyed his time at Tarrytowne Estates, including the staff, and residents he regarded as friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Christine. He is survived by his children, Danielle (Tyler) Putney, and Richard U. Shafer; grandson, Richard Jacob "Jake" Shafer; step-grandchildren, Zachary (Alyssa), Matthew, Caleb, Rachael (Caleb); step-great-grandchildren, Abigail, Lily Grace, and Henry.
A celebration of his life will be held from 1-4pm on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at 624 35th St. NW, Canton, OH 44709. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Aultman Compassionate Care Center, 2821 Woodlawn Ave NW, Canton, OH 44708.
