Mrs. Souraya Farid Fares “Sousou”, 1930-2020, passed away at the age of 89 years in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the wife of Engineer Halim Assa’ad Faltas for 54 years. Grandpa Halim preceded her to heaven in 2002. Souraya is the beloved mother of Dr. Marie-Therese Faltas of Columbia, South Carolina, Dr. Amal Assa’ad (Dr. Raouf Amin), of Cincinnati, Ohio and Dr. Manal Assa’ad Dr. (Nabil Fahmy) of Canton, Ohio. She is the grandmother of Dr. Maryse Amin (Francis Baverso), Dr. Annie Amin (Ian Chaves), and Lissa Amin (Jay Ziegelgruber), all of Cincinnati, Ohio and of Dr. Joseph Fahmy, of Chicago, Illinois, Natalie Fahmy of Syracuse, New York, Alex Fahmy of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Nicholas Fahmy of Canton, Ohio. She is the great grandmother of Miriana (3 years) and Rami (1 year) Baverso and Laila Sami Chaves (2 weeks).
Sousou was born and raised in Egypt, the third of five children to Farid Fares Megally, a civil engineer, and her Matilda Labib Yousef, a home maker. She graduated from College De La Sainte Famille in Mansoura, Egypt, fluent in French and Arabic. She married Halim in 1948 and was a loving wife and a strong support. Both dedicated their lives to lovingly bringing up and educating their three daughters. She was talented in sewing and dressmaking; she designed and made all her daughters’ clothes, even the wedding gowns. When she arrived in the USA in 1982, the first of the family to immigrate to the USA, she made a career as a tailor at high end women apparel stores in North Carolina: Fine Feathers, Talheimer’s, Wedding Belle and Ivey’s. Sousou was a beautiful, bright, intelligent, strong and determined woman. She taught herself English and at the age of 65 aced her first driver’s license test. She retired in 1992 to help her daughters raise their children. Along with Grandma Lilly, Grandpa Halim and Grandma Betty, she taught her grandchildren love, respect, discipline and faith in God and held them close to her heart. She immersed them in the Egyptian heritage, taught them Arabic and French and feasted their taste buds on her delicious recipes. She took pride in her children and grandchildren’s accomplishments and always gave grace and thanks to God. She was a devout Coptic Orthodox Christian, generous to the poor and needy. Prayer was how she got through life; indeed faith and prayers were how she got us all through life. Even when Alzheimer’s stole her spark for the last 8 years of her life, she was gentle, loving and inspiring to all her caretakers. Her legacy lives in us!!
